Disadvantages of Wind Power: How to Overcome Them

Mike Walden
Many of us fondly remember Cervantes´ famous creation, Don Quixote, picking up a fight with a windmill along with his sidekick Sancho Panza. Even though many years have passed since Cervantes wrote his famous novel, many of us are still imitating the Don´s actions and are finding a lot to complain about wind power systems. Let´s take a closer look at some of the disadvantages of wind power.

Wind power, ever since its first inception, has always managed to create a good deal of buzz. In the face of an imminent energy crisis and rampant environmental pollution, wind power came across as an excellent source of renewable and sustainable ´green´ energy. It was even touted to be better than solar energy, another popular alternative source for energy, because wind power could work virtually 24 hours a day. The energy produced was also virtually free and some wind power systems worked so well that they completely replaced the need for having any other source of power. However, as the initial enthusiasm began to die out a little, people became increasingly aware of two major disadvantages of wind power systems. First, the high cost of the wind turbines and secondly, the need to find the right location. Let´s face it, wind turbine systems, with all their complicated components and intricate paraphernalia, are not very easy to install. They are also rather expensive and need regular maintenance. Moreover, some components, especially the batteries, also need to be replaced periodically.

Many are of the opinion that the chief disadvantage of wind power is its highly unpredictable nature. If the winds are blowing strong and fair, you can have plenty of power to keep things going happily. However, the very next moment there could be a sudden drop in power generation if the wind dies down.

Even though the popularity of wind power seems threatened by these disadvantages, the fact is that wind power systems are still the rage around the world. This is because the many advantages of wind power, especially in its capacity as a clean source of energy, far outweigh the handful of disadvantage that it has. A closer look at all the problems that wind power systems carry these days will reveal that these are essentially technical issues. As technology continues to evolve, and as wind power systems become better and more sophisticated owing to continuing research, one can hope to see these problems and disadvantages disappear.

What makes wind power so extremely popular the world over is its eco-friendly and economical nature. By switching over to wind power from conventional power, one can drastically reduce electricity bills, make huge savings on energy consumption costs and above all, keep the environment clean and green. These are still the best reasons why millions around the world are turning to wind power every year.

Continuing research in the field of alternative energy production, especially solar and wind power systems, is making these systems more powerful, more dependable and increasingly affordable. It will not be long before all the current disadvantages of using wind power will be gone for good and it will find even wider acceptance around the globe. By embracing wind and solar power, mankind can stop the reckless exploitation of fossil fuels for energy production, curb environmental pollution and halt global warming by eliminating harmful emissions, and the pave the way for a greener tomorrow for our children.

The need for alternative sources of energy has never been as acute as now. With our already dwindling reserves of natural resources, especially fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum, the time to switch over to alternative sources of power is now!

Thanks to all the technological advancements made in recent years in the field of wind energy systems, you can install a wind power system in your home quite easily nowadays. In fact, a completely functional wind power system can be set up all by oneself. However, consulting a good step-by-step guide is strongly recommended to ensure a trouble-free and successful installation. Just ensure that you have the knowledge to help you select the right location, buy the right equipment at the right prices, wire the system correctly, and of course, take all the necessary safety precautions.
