The Moral Responsibility to Interfere

Del Williams
Sometimes we must interfere. When Human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Whenever man or women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must-at that moment-become the center of the universe.

- Elie Wiesel

When the bombs went off in London on Thursday, the world held its collective breath waiting to see if more were coming. The survivors of September 11, 2001 remembered well, the wait to see fir the whole thing was just an accident or what. Nations now wonder will be the next victim of these senseless attacks against innocent people. The world seems to be sitting in fear, waiting.

Well, after much thought and consideration, I have concluded that we need to go after the insurgents with a force that we have yet to use. We should be filling them with such a fear that their children fear us. Instead, we have been playing a cat and mouse game dealing with public relation issues. The question is no longer should we be in Iraq, but how can we morally turn a blind eye as some would suggest.

The war did not start the insurgency, but revealed its true nature. It is heartless, and could care less about anyone or anything, but its own agenda, which is to promote violence and repress free thought.

The issue of America being the police dog of the world is really ridiculous since we still have nations that won’t let their people watch or listen to what they want, kill whole groups of people because of their religion or tribe, and pick wars with other countries just to feel significant.

When American actors were talking about giving up their citizenship based on who won the presidential election they failed to see that the reason they could get away with their speeches was the American blood lost on battlefields. Of course, none of the talkers ever did real military duty, so they do not know about sacrifice. In any other country, they would have been tried for treason and imprisoned or killed. It is funny that few actually followed through with what they threatened. All talk and no action.

Some people think all the problems are because on one person or group of people. This is not true. Hate of new ideas and freedom is at the bottom of all the loss of innocent lives. It does not matter what color or nationality they are, but what they have come to believe about freedom, tolerance, and ideas.

Anyone who thinks that the amount of people lost should be a factor in determining how significant a price London has paid is really barking up the wrong tree. The moment Americans or any other society who currently believes in freedom moves from that will be the day that the insurgents win. It will also be the day when those actors will really want to give up their citizenship.

In conclusion, America is morally required to interfere because our freedom demands it.
