Is X-Men 3 a microcosm on Homosexuality?

Allan J. Ashinoff
"There's nothing to cure. There's nothing wrong with any of us for that matter."

Storm, from the film X-Men 3: The Last Stand

The premise of the latest summer sizzler ‘X-Men 3: The Last Stand’ is that human scientists have developed a ‘cure’ for the affliction of mutant genetics. This serum once injected into a mutant host will, in one dose, permanently suppress any genetic mutation and leave the host in a ‘natural’ human state. Is the film ‘X-Men 3: The Last Stand’ a social statement that echoes the plight of homosexual acceptance in America?

There’s no denying Marvel Comic’s and their magazines have been mimicking societal controversy for some time. Aside from being action packed X-Men magazines have been statements about being outcast from society for many years. Not that long ago Marvel reinvented the old time popular western comic ‘The Rawhide Kid.’ The Rawhide Kid was transformed from a smart, sharp shooting gunslinger into smart, sharp shooting gunslinger with homosexual desires. Marvel Comic’s has not been and is not above to trying to influence society to increase its audience.

Although the natural evolution of mankind and the suppression of mankind’s evolution is not the theme of the homosexual agenda in America, the X-Men movie does raise an interesting dilemma. What if, through the mapping of the human genome, humans were able to isolate and identify the genes which are responsible for the difference between heterosexuals and homosexuals? What if a pill or serum were synthesized to correct these genetic difference’s that makes men desire men and women desire women? Would homosexuals choose the cure as the movie character ‘Rogue’ did simply to conform, to be accepted, or to know physical love? Would others be provoked into violence at the attempt to alter their natural state of being?

“I strongly favour controlling our children's genetic destinies. Working intelligently and wisely to see that good genes dominate as many lives as possible is the truly moral way for us to proceed.”

Dr. James Watson

As mankind puts the finishing touches on the human genetic sequence the desire to use this knowledge to improve mankind will prevail. One day the capability to erase any possibility of disease or genetic imperfection in utero will be commonplace. There will come a day where embryos will be screened and genetically tweaked to correct potential defects and to resist any and all known diseases.

As genetic science matures the genetic links to human traits and tendencies will one day be deciphered, isolated, and configured. Parents could one day choose their child’s height, hair color, eye color, weight and sex. Parents may even have the option of choosing their offspring’s level of creativity, athleticism, and/ or beauty. Society could one day require the filtration of certain genes to reduce the possibility of violent or criminal tendencies. Governments may one day set quotas on the sex of newborns to ensure population growth. In the not too distant future parents of newborns entering the world with any degree of physical or genetic imperfection will be considered immoral and cruel.

The moral questions posed by genetics will only increase as mans mastery of the field progresses. Unlike a Hollywood plot the impact of mans technological exploration on society will not always lead to a ‘feel good’ conclusion. In perhaps as little as one hundred years, will any parent with a pseudo-ala carte choice in their child’s basic make-up, choose to allow their child to be born lacking perfect physical features, or less than perfect mental capacity, or less than optimal physical prowess? Would a parent allow their precious child to be born with a disposition which causes them to be a social outcast?

To date a homosexual gene has not been identified. The question of whether homosexuality is learned or is physical, or is a mental condition persists. As science continues its journey down the road of genetic discovery the likelihood that a gene will be found which causes the physical conditions that prompts homosexual desire in human’s increases. A gene will either be found which isolates the conditions associated with homosexuality or science will conclusively say there is no gene which prompts homosexual tendencies. When that day comes there will no longer be any degree of ambiguity to why a person is homosexual.
