Can You Afford To Ignore Email Marketing?

James Woolley
Many internet marketers have read about the importance of building your own email list but still decide not to go down this route. This could be for a variety of reasons. It may simply be down to laziness or it may be because they don't believe they have the technical skills to use an autoresponder. However I don't personally believe you can afford to ignore email marketing.

If you run a website or blog and are relying on search engine traffic or social bookmarking traffic to generate profits, then that's all well and good but it's not a reliable income stream. The number of websites (and therefore your competition) is growing on a daily basis so relying on free search engine traffic, for instance, is a very dangerous game.

Furthermore even if you are generating a decent amount of traffic, you are still missing out on a lot of additional opportunities to make money in the long run. Having an email list of subscribers will allow you to market to a large audience on a regular basis for many years down the line, even if you decide to close your website or blog.

I myself made the mistake of ignoring email marketing for a year or so when I first started out but I eventually succumbed and in the first week after adding an opt-in form to my website, I immediately generated 2 sales. That isn't that impressive I know but at the time I was blown away by the potential of email marketing.

The trick is to give people a reason to join your list first of all, and then treat them well once they do sign up. If you provide them with good quality content as often as possible then your sales figures are likely to be high when you do recommend a particular product because you have built up a good level of trust.

Even if you simply add an opt-in form on your website or blog it's better than not building a list at all. Indeed a modest list of just a couple of hundred subscribers can provide you with a decent income in some niches.

So I strongly suggest you start building your list as soon as possible. Autoresponders are actually very easy to use and although there is usually a regular monthly fee to pay, this will usually be dwarfed by any profits you make from your list. Industry figures suggest that it's perfectly possible to generate $1 per subscriber per month so it's not difficult to generate a solid monthly income for yourself, particularly in the right niche.
