Fungus Infection From Contact Lens

Since the middle of 2005 to early this year, the reports of outbreaks of a rare fungus eye infection among some contact lens users, in countries such as Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and the United States have certainly caused a scare among those of us who depend on these lenses for sight. It has been reported that without treatment, this infection can last two to three months, scar the cornea and blind its victims. The fungus is commonly found in plant material and soil in tropical and subtropical areas.

The threat of an eye infection depends not just soley on the cleaning solution but also the way we treat them. If you wear contact lens, then you need to pay constant attention to cleanliness when handling your lenses.

Here are some DOs and DON'Ts :

  • Wash hands clean with soap before you touch the lenses.

  • Besides cleaning and disinfecting the contact lens case regularly, remember to replace it as well. A good time to change to a new lens case is when you have just opened a brand new bottle of cleaning solution.

  • Always recap the cleaning solution. Leaving it open encourages bacteria growth especially in warm climates.

  • Don't swim with contact lenses.

  • Don't wear lenses (disposables or not) past their used-by dates.

  • Remove contact lenses when eyes are sore, red, itchy, tearing excessively or tired. If symptoms persists, contact your optometrist.

  • Do not wear lenses overnight, which is known to increase the risk of fungus infection.

  • Close eyes when spraying hair spray or perfume and step away from the mist.

  • Do switch to daily lens if you have problems maintaining cleanliness.
