Choosing the right wood floor can be fun and exciting. There are more wood flooring choices now than ever before. However, there are a few questions you should answer.

1.) What species of wood flooring do I want?

2.) Do I want a fine or course grain wood floor?

3.) What color floor do I want?

4.) What do I have in my wood flooring budget?

What species of wood flooring do I want? Up until now the choices in wood flooring were limited. Most folks figured North American Oak was about it. Within the last 15 years the number of exotic species has exploded. Every corner of the globe is offering quality wood flooring. Africa offers species like Wenge, Padauk, Sapele and, Zebra Wood. Australia offers species like Australian Cypress, Jarrah, Spotted Gum and, Leopard Wood. South America offers Cherry, Walnut, Teak and, Tiger Wood. Consult with your wood flooring professional on witch species is right for you.

Do I want fine or course grain wood floor? Grain and texture are loosely used to describe similar properties of wood. Grain is often used in reference to annual growth rings, as "fine" or "course". Grain is used to indicate the direction of fibers, as in straight, spiral and curly. Grain also is described as being either "open" or "closed," referring to the relative size of the pores. Examples of open grained wood flooring are North American Oak, Wenge and, Ash. Examples of closed grained wood flooring are, American Cherry, Maple, and Jarrah. Fine grained wood flooring will appear very flat and smooth with almost no texture. Course grained material will have plenty of texture. The floor finish will appear smooth. What color floor do I want? Many interior decorators use floor color to accentuate the furniture. If the furniture is Mahogany or Walnut the floor color will be shades of red or brown. Course grained wood like North American Oak can be stained just about any color. Unfortunately, most closed grained materials such as Mahogany, Jarrah, and Maple do not accept stain well. However, these woods don´t need to be stained. The colors range from light golden tones to dark brown and red. The best way to show the woods beauty is to finish it natural.

What do I have in my wood flooring budget? Wood flooring material prices has never been better. The biggest bang for your buck will be North American Red or White Oak. However, the cost for exotic materials like Brazilian Cherry and Australian Cypress can be very attractive as well. In some cases oak with a stain will cost about the same as a naturally finished exotic. Once again consult with your wood flooring professional to come up with your budget.
