Notre Dame: Pro Life, Really?

Stan Grimes
Okay so let me get this straight. A large group of Notre Dame students are protesting President Obama´s upcoming speech at the school´s commencement ceremony. Am I right? They are protesting because the President´s belief in pro choice. Am I right again? This section of the Notre Dame student population believes in pro life and I understand that even some of the faculty is protesting. Now I also understand that this anger is being stemmed by the protesters belief in Catholicism.

To coin Randy Jackson´s slang, "now listen up dogs," I present to you a set of assumptions. 1. The Catholic Church is totally against abortion. 2. Abortion is murder in the Church´s eyes. 3. Murder and abortion are against all paradigms of the Catholic Church. Are my assumptions close to being right?

I now want to clarify a few things in order to shake the fuzzies out of my head. Several hundred years ago, the Catholic Church sanctioned the murder and torture of people during the infamous period called the Crusades. Murder then, according to this historical period was okay. Why, because the people they murdered were adults already born into this world? Anything goes if you have already taken your first gulp of air?

I am still a little fuzzy on this, so please indulge my ignorance. The leaders of the Catholic Church turned their heads when many of their clergy thought it quite okay to kill the minds of little children by sodomizing, molesting, and otherwise sexually abusing them. You see, in my humble opinion, sexual abuse is as bad if not worse than killing. So apparently the Catholic Church is selective in their definition of killing. How many choirboys are receiving mental health counseling today because of the Church´s neglect of reality in the past?

Notre Dame is not hallowed ground my friends. It´s a school. Does every student believe in pro life? Do all the football and basketball players from outside schools that step foot on your hallowed ground believe in pro life? If they don´t are they still allowed to play football or any other sport on your acrimonious campus or do you protest their presence? Is everyone on your campus, Catholic? If not, why? I am curious you see. Hypocrisy is a cancer and so many religions are guilty of it. My Catholic friends your church does not have a great history and justifying your history because "it´s God´s will" doesn´t get it for me.

My unsolicited advice to you is "stop whining." Show some gratitude that one of the country´s greatest presidents (by the way Catholics also voted for him) is even talking to you. Learn from him. Perhaps you´ll walk away from your graduation with a new perspective.
