The awareness of harmful chemicals in cosmetics and skin care products is continuing to grow steadily. More and more people are becoming aware that many of the ingredients in makeup, hair care products, and lotions are not only ineffective but very harmful and counterproductive. However one area that often gets overlooked is baby products. It is often assumed that if a product is labeled "Baby Safe" it is as the minimum "non-toxic" if not downright natural. This is a dangerous assumption. The chemicals which appear in Johnson and Johnson and many other popular products are linked to cancer, reproduction toxicity, respiratory problems, etc. These chemicals actually soak in through the skin and must be processed out by the liver.

Babies are very vulnerable to these chemicals because vital organs are still forming and immune functions are beginning to develop. Because the skin provides a direct path into the bloodstream, some researchers have determined that it is more dangerous to put these chemicals on the skin than it would be to eat them. The digestive system purges and dilutes what we eat, but the skin is a straight shot into the bloodstream.

"But how can harmful chemicals be in baby products" you ask? The FDA does not regulate these chemicals, so companies may freely use them. And they do.

One of the most common chemicals to surface in baby care that is assumed to be "non-toxic" is Mineral Oil. Mineral oil is a byproduct of the distillation of gasoline from crude oil. It is the main ingredient in many baby care items such as baby oil, petroleum jelly, and baby lotions.

The skin is the body´s largest organ and plays a vital role in overall health.

Mineral oil acts as a thin plastic, impenetrable layer on the skin. It is difficult to absorb and clogs the pores, which slows the skin´s ability to eliminate toxins- which can promote acne and other disorders. This process slows down the skin function and normal cell development causing the skin to prematurely age, and a number of studies have linked cancer of the skin to mineral oil exposure. According to Australia´s National Occupational Health and Safety Commission, "Prolonged contact with mineral oil has the associated risk of developing skin conditions such as folliculitis, eczematous dermatitis, melanosis of the face and planter warts.

Once the oil is absorbed, it is broken down by the liver and passes through the intestinal tract. And once the oil is present in the intestinal tract, it will absorb all the fat-soluble vitamins found there. It is essentially stealing important vitamins from the body, which the body will not be able to replace. This can eventually lead to nutritional deficiencies.

Oddly enough Mineral Oil is still widely prescribed by some pediatricians as a "safe" laxative for children.

In light of these harmful effects, when caring for babies, it is best to use all natural products. All caretakers know that babies love to put their hands in their mouths. This also means that whatever is on their hands is also going in through their mouth. It is best not to chance your baby´s health with mineral oil and petroleum based products.

In light of all this, are we really willing to risk all the possible negative effects just for the convenience of what we have "always used"?

Natural oils such as Sweet Almond, Jojoba, and Olive oil make wonderful alternatives to mineral oil, and have no negative side effects. They leave your babies skin soft and supple, while also allowing it to breathe.
