Boulder Colorado - A City Of Many Bests

Rex Manz
Boulder Colorado is a small city with a population of approximately 125,000 including resident students attending the University of Colorado located in Boulder. The median age is a young 29-years-old. There are approximately 40.000 families that call Boulder home. Situated at an elevation of 5,340-feet, Boulder is often viewed as the Gateway to the Rockies.

Gold was discovered in Colorado in 1858. The Colorado Gold Belt, as identified by geological surveys at the time, reached as far as Boulder in the north. In 1859, Boulder City was created as a mining supply town in support of the local mining activity. Along with the general stores came churches, saloons, banks, hotels and a hospital. Railroad service arrived in 1873 and the Boulder train depot was built in 1890. The University of Colorado was established in Boulder in 1874. Boulder High School was formed in 1875, the oldest in the State of Colorado.

In 1909, the City of Boulder organized the construction of The Boulderado Hotel in downtown Boulder to attract tourist in the wake of the failing mining industry. It worked. In the mid-1980s, the City of Boulder blocked-off a portion of Pearl Street and created a pedestrian mall to create a public city center. It worked again. Today, the Pearl Street Pedestrian Mall is home to cafes, boutique shops, restaurants, bookstores, espresso bars, among others. Street performers can be found during the summer entertaining locals and visitors with juggling, magic, musical performance and more. The Downtown Boulder hosts many festivals through-out the year. The Boulder Central Park, the Boulder Creek Path and the Boulder County Farmers´ Market are within a few blocks of Pearl Street.

Boulder appeals to many different groups of people from academians to atheletes to families to active retirees to artists. The scenery is beautiful and the outdoors inviting.
