Is NetBeans vs Eclipse a Valid Debate?

Jens Eckels
Both environments have quality uses, and obviously, the price is right for each (free!). However, once you get into the plugin market, an intruging wrinkle in this debate is MyEclipse. This Eclipse-based product has been revolutionary in many ways, including bringing the first AJAX support tools into the Eclipse environment. MyEclipse has also recently integrated one of NetBeans' most popular Swing UI features, Matisse. With full compatability with the upcoming release of Eclipse 3.2, a seamless transisiton should ensue (knock, knock).

Rather than an either/or proposition, developers may want to look into an environment that is bringing many features of the open source world into one arena: MyEclipse. Free trials allow developers to try the features of the product, and at the price of $30/yr (including full support and documentation), the time and monetary investment is worry-free.

I opine that the polarization of this market is not good for the consumer, and a good start to bridging the gap is the use of plugins that incorporate features of both fantastic environments. Just my take.
