Kentucky Derby 2009

Michelle Malsbury, BSBM, MM
Sunday, May 2, 2009 is the 135th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Lexington, Kentucky. (May 2nd also happens to be my birthday---48th) The first Kentucky Derby was held in 1875. The Kentucky Derby is one place where the spectacular horses are not the only show. Derby attendees vie for best dressed by sporting a variety of festive hats and impressive haute couture. The official drink is the Mint Julep and they are as delicious as they are refreshing. General Admission is $40 and the gates open at 8am.

There is a two day in-field ticket available with Club privileges for $175 per person or Derby Day in-field ticket for $150 per person. The Club is a shaded area in the inside of the track where bars, cooking demonstrations, contests, up-scale restrooms are the standard, "Top Chef" hosts the day´s menu of this fete, and Jumbo-tron televisions are available for highlights. Attendees can relax in comfort and style in this area.

Last year Big Brown was the winner of the Kentucky Derby with Jorge Chavez as her jockey. Eight Bellies took second with Kent Desormeaux as her rider. And third was Denis of Cork. Since 2001 this race has been won in just over two minutes with the 2001 race coming in at just under the two minute mark. The track is four furlongs in length and tends to be rated as fast.

Pioneer of the Nile is currently the favored horse to win the 135th Kentucky Derby partly because she was so impressive in her win at the Santa Anita Derby earlier this year. Pioneer of the Nile has four previous wins to her record and has been looking quite good in her training leading up to this year´s Kentucky Derby. She will be the horse to beat!

Other contenders in the 135th Kentucky Derby are; I Want Revenge, Desert Party, Regal Ransom, Chocolate Candy, Quality Road, Hold Me Back, Dunkirk, Friesan Fire, Papa Clem, Win Willy, Square Eddie, Mr. Hot Stuff, General Quarters, Advice, Flying Private, Summer Bird, Mine that Bird, Musket Man, and West Side Bernie. There has been talk that Quality Road may be out of this race, but watch that closely to be certain that is the case before betting on her.

Information about the Kentucky Derby can be found on www.kentuckyderby.com. The web site is very user friendly and has links for statistics from previous races and those currently slated for this race, history of the race itself, attire, tickets, seating, and more, menu for the Club section, and betting. All links are comprehensive and informative. Under the betting link you can sign up for new or seasoned veteran. You can look up and learn about handicapping, get help picking your horses, bet with $1, $10, or $100 limits and a $100 signing bonus too! Under attire you can purchase your favored horses jackets and learn about the horses and their trainers. You can find statistics as far back as when this race began, 1875, and at twenty five year intervals since then. The statistics will tell you the dates the race was held, the winner, jockey, second place holder, and third runner up, as well as, race conditions and the net winnings to the winner.

Please enjoy the 2009 Kentucky Derby and don´t forget to toast a Mint Julep to me for my birthday too!
