Like prohibition, a failed experiment of the 1920's, the war on drugs now is a lost war. As of today we can't win no matter what our policy has been. When prohibition was repealed in 1933 primarily because of the lack of funding, due to the Depression, needed to combat the crime associated with the then illegal sale of alcohol the nations crime and murder rate was at an all time high. After prohibition was repealed the following decade saw a dramatic reduction in crime and murder rates. Today our crime, incarceration, and murder rates are even higher than they were back in the 1920's. Not only did the United States create the war on drugs but we are the biggest consumers. Let's call our drug policy Prohibition II. A failure once again by our" wizards" in Washington.
To save lives and waist full spending the most expedient policy would be patterned after the Swiss. Provide free treatment for those who want it. Supply, for sale, pure drugs with medical advise for those who seek them. In this way not only does this create revenue for local communities it decreases the time and extra expense of arrests and incarnations of our law enforcement departments that now would be free to devote more time to other more serious crimes.
Education is crucial to relieve the growing dependency of the vast volume of drugs consumed daily. Preventive measures are essential to stave off their habitual use. When education, physical and mental combined are increased throughout each life our society will see a sharp decline in drug abuse and use and a much healthier and productive population will result
It is time our lawmakers change the failure of our current drug policy and adopt a more successful one. One that will decrease the waist full spending that is currently consuming our tax dollars to one that will generate revenue for all the citizens programs and services that are essential for a society such as ours to flourish and prosper. A tax base sufficient to cover all new programs such as Universal Health Care, Guaranteed Social Security, Elimination of the Federal Budget Deficit and Education Reform will result because of a innovative policy. One that actually will work.
