Madonna Adopting Yet Again to Give Others the Attention She Missed!

Madonna´s in the news again, but not for her "boy-toy" or her divorce or because her daughter would like her to dress like her mother and less like her peer, but because she´s in Malawi awaiting permission to adopt another child. In 2006 she adopted her young son, David Banda, and now she wants to bring home a sibling for him

Many are wondering why she´s adopting again and why from a foreign country. This whole event is taking up considerable space in the media these days, as she waits for permission to move a little girl out of an orphanage into New York to become part of her family. Personally, I like the idea that David will have someone who looks like him and is close in age to him; Madonna´s older daughter is now a teen-ager and will be out of the house in a few short years, and her son with her ex-husband, Guy Richie will undoubtedly divide his time between England and America.

Madonna lost her own mother, when she was only five and, it´s rumored, grew up with a step mother she didn´t much care for. Today we have enough research that demonstrates that when a young child loses their mother at a very early age, there are definite repercussions. A child can actually feel abandoned, as her developmental process has been interrupted; she can even wonder if she was responsible for her mother´s death and carry the scars of those negative emotions forever. All kids need their mother´s attention, as attention is everyone´s core need. We all know the reputations that step-mothers have had down through the ages; we can only imagine how Madonna fared. She still needs much attention, works at getting it and is brilliant at getting it. She´s a gifted musician and writer with a gorgeous, well-toned body. Sometimes, she´s gotten outrageous to attract attention through her clothes and behavior. Other times she´s used her talents which are abundant and which audiences pay much money to see and hear.

Another celebrity also in the news these days speaking about the devastating loss of his mother is Prince William, whose mother, Princess Diana, died over ten years ago. He is quoted as saying, "I still feel the emptiness on Mother´s Day." To keep his mother´s memory alive, he continues to support and work actively in a charity for homeless kids, for which his mother was a Patron.

Peoples´ needs for attention vary in size, shape and intensity. As children, when we don´t get enough or the kind we want, we often withdraw, get angry, behave in distracting ways or act out to get any kind, even if it´s negative. As teen-agers, kids can become more aggressive in attracting attention with their hair colors, their tattoos and jewelry enhancement, cutting themselves or even running away. Some needy adults go on to become violent to get attention or even self-destruct. Eating disorders, drug and alcohol abuse are an escalating way to get mega attention from family, doctors, and treatment centers. Hopefully as we mature, we learn to give ourselves the attention we need or at least find people who we learn to trust enough to ask for what we need.

Peoples´ attention needs is a subject which needs to be given lots of attention! Our schools, from Elementary to Education to Medical to Law and on and on could benefit greatly from a new department called Attention Studies. This is both a simple subject and a very complicated, sophisticated one.

The bottom line is that Madonna is going to give her new children the kind of attention she didn´t get and probably still wants!
