Obama Administration Looking To Renew Weapons Ban

Dave Gibson
Recently, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced his support for the return of the so-called Assault Weapons Ban. Of course, Holder is hardly alone in this wish. Shortly after he was elected President, Barack Obama announced on his official website, his desire for "making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent."

After ten years, the politicians that voted the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban into law, could find no support to renew the ban. An attempt in 2004 by Sen. Diane Feinstein to renew the ban failed miserably with a 8-90 vote. The ban went off into the sunset because an overwhelming number of Americans finally understood it was truly useless.

The ban was actually voted in with dishonestly. The American public was led to believe that it would help to take machine-guns off of our streets. Nonsense! Fully-automatic weapons come are strictly regulated under the National Firearms Act of 1934, and there are relatively few of them in this country. You simply cannot walk into a gun shop and buy a machine gun.

The weapons which fell under the ban, did so basically for cosmetic reasons. Weapons with folding stocks, flash suppressors, pistol grips, or that hold a large magazine were outlawed. Those features cannot make the weapon fire any faster, nor do they in anyway boost the firepower.

Hunting rifles and double-barreled shotguns can be just as deadly as an AK-47. However, those weapons do not appear as ominous. In 1994, Diane Feinstein asked her staff to come up with a list of assault weapons to place on the banned list. They got their hands on a gun catalog and went through--picking out weapons that were black and those that had a militaristic appearance. None of course, were fully-automatic.

In fact, gun manufacturers often referred to the ban as the "ugly gun law."

The ban expired in the fall of 2004. At the time, then Presidential-candidate John Kerry claimed that criminals would now buy so-called assault weapons in gun shops. Kerry failed to mention however, that those people would still have to pass a background check.

Gun control never works because the logic behind it is completely flawed. Criminals rarely purchase their weapons through legitimate gun retailers. They buy them on the street, where they are cheap and cannot be traced. Or they simply steal them. Putting gun control laws in place, only help to separate law-abiding people from their constitutional right to own a gun. Thus, giving the upper hand to the violent criminals.

Kerry also claimed that terrorists would flock to gun shows to buy their weapons. Oh really?...Well, I did not know that gun shows sold box-cutters!

More civilians died on September 11, 2001 than on any other day in American history. The deadliest attack ever made on this country, took place without anyone firing a single shot or even brandishing a gun.

The Columbine High School shootings, the D.C. area sniper attacks, and 9/11 all have one thing in common--they all took place while the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban was in place. As I said earlier...useless!

Of course, we have no reason to believe that our current government will be satisfied with simply banning so-called ´assault weapons.´

Those on the far left will not be satisfied until firearms of all kinds are made illegal. Why however, should people such as Eric Holder and Diane Feinstein be concerned with protecting themselves? They have armed guards to do just that. You see, our safety and protection do not matter very much to the ruling class. We merely pay their salaries.
