Stop Dizziness From Disrupting Your Work Day

"I found it hard enough to get out of the house let alone even consider trying to go to work," said Gloria, an administrative assistant at a prominent law firm. For years Gloria had been battling bouts of persistent dizziness or vertigo often accompanied by nausea, hearing los or ringing in the ears. Gloria is one of hundreds of thousands of people trying to cope with a condition called Menieres Syndrome.

Previously medication and staying home from from work(and the subsequent loss of income) were Gloria's only options of controlling this condition but a recent paper presented at Sherman College of Chiropractic has given cause for new hope.

Chiropractor and researcher, Dr. Michael Burcon presented his report of 139 patients who were suffering from Menieres. He got them to rate their symptoms on a scale of 0 (no symptoms) – 10 (worst symptoms imaginable) before starting treatment.

Dr. Burcon found that all of the subjects exhibited a loss of flexibility or alignment of the vertebra at the very top of their neck. He believes that this causes irritation of the 8th cranial nerve (the auditory nerve that supplies your ears).

Typically on interview, the patients reported a whiplash-type injury to the neck, about 15 years prior to the onset of their Menieres symptoms. He asserted that it is this trauma that probably caused the problems in the neck which gradually triggers the onset of the Menieres Syndrome.

His treatment of these patients suffering Menieres Syndrome consisted of improving the alignment and flexibility of the upper neck vertebra with a series of chiropractic adjustments. And how effect was it? The results were dramatic.

On average the severity of symptoms went from a severe rating of 8.5 down to 1.4. Even more amazing was that many of these patients had persisted with these symptoms for many years.

By focusing on the ears it seems that researchers have been focusing on the symptoms rather than the cause of Menieres. Dr. Burcon´s research and results indicates that the real cause of Menieres may be due to the loss of alignment of the neck vertebra which irritates the nerve to your ears.

If your work life is being disrupted by dizziness consider getting your neck examined by a chiropractor.
