We interviewed Robert to find out more about his exciting new book, Five Steps to C.A.L.M. (Career and Life Management).

Thank you for this interview, Robert. Can you tell us what were some of the challenges you faced while writing your book?

Attempting to convey my thoughts from the abstract to the concrete while maintaining that same conviction that existed in the abstract.

Why did you feel this book was necessary in light to the thousands of other business books on the market today? What makes yours different?

I have read thousands of other business books on the market today and in my humble opinion my books addresses areas like Making Decisions-How to lay out your Strategy. And Strategic Planning which to me is vital for anyone moving through today´s job market.

The first step in a successful job search is to know you intimately in order to focus appropriately on the type of work best suited for your unique interests, skills, abilities, and personality. Understanding these areas of personality evaluation, skill transferability, and life-career goal identification allows the user to answer these important life-questions:

a. What do I really want to do?

b. Where do I want to live?

c. What quality of life do I want and need (for those and the significant in my life)?

d. What are the skills that I can migrate to another industry/culture?

BENEFITS:

a. Learn about personality style and temperament: What makes you unique!

b. Uncover those significant emotional events that impacted your values,

goals, and ultimately your career choices.

c. Discover why you think, feel, and choose the way that you do.

d. Learn how to select occupations and employers that best suit your

personality and skills.

MAKING DECISIONS - HOW TO LAY OUT YOUR STRATEGY

What do I want to do? (Not what do I want to be!)

This is the most difficult part of career planning and upward mobility,

as well as the most-often neglected. It is the necessary first step in

any effective upward mobility campaign. It involves:

IDENTIFYING YOUR MAJOR SKILLS, ASSETS, ABILITIES, TALENTS, TRAITS, by:

Researching your past experiences to get at hidden skills

Rendering your own value judgment on your skills, in terms of (1) your interest in using them; (2) the pleasure you take in using them; and (3) the amount of expertise you have.

This wi11:

Bring order out of random life and work experiences and seemingly unrelated accomplishments

Increase self-confidence

Get at a variety of aspects of you

Demonstrate to you that you have skills already that are completely transferable and portable.

It is what´s in you that should determine what you do - not what is "out there."

Where do I want to do it?

Once having determined your skills, the question is where do you want to use them. This step includes:

Assessing your interests (What fascinates you?)

Determining what values are most important to you

Knowing the kinds of working environments you would be happiest in

Deciding the kinds of issues you want to help solve.

This means focusing in on the place you want to work through research leading to decision-making concerning geographic locale, community and individual bureau or department. It is in effect a process of elimination, enabling you to reduce alternatives to manageable proportions.

How do I get from here to there?

A much less awesome problem if you have gone through the steps 'above! This means:

Identifying those individuals and/or agencies/departments which share

your major interests and concerns and have passed your tests in reference to the above (WHERE) requirements

Learning everything you will need to know about them in advance, identifying that one individual whom you must convince of your overwhelming value to his/her effort

Meeting him/her under non-stress conditions and presenting a proposal

which will demonstrate how your skills are of value in reaching his/her

goals.

Thank you for your in depth explanation, Robert. What´s next for you?

Yes, Five Steps to C.A.L.M. the Second five Steps to enhancing (you) the (product) in career and life job search management due out some time early 2009.
