Treatment for Head lice, Causes, Symptoms
Causes of Head Lice
Head-to-head or body-to-body contact. This is the most common mode of transmission and may occur as children or family members play or interact closely together.
Close proximity of stored belongings. Storing clothing items next to each other in closets, lockers or on side-by-side hooks at school, or storing personal items, such as pillows, blankets, combs and stuffed toys, in close proximity at home can permit lice to spread.
Symptoms of Head Lice
Intense itching of the scalp
Small, red bumps on the scalp, neck, and shoulders
Bumps may become crusty and ooze
Head lice prevention
Wash your head regularly to minimize the risk. Head lice are not a sign of bad hygiene, but washing the hair and thus the scalp, might just help, so why not?
Shaving your hair off is fine if you are a guy, but what do you do if you are a female? For longer hair, the best "tool" to help you prevent head louse from multiplying is a nit or head louse comb available at any store.
Treatments for Head Lice
The most commonly used prescribed medication for these problems is lindane (Kwell). Doctors apparently have not figured out yet that it doesn't work and has been associated with some potential safety concerns. Efficacy of lindane has been decreasing over the past few decades to lindane due to the emergence of treatment resistant lice. Lindane has limited efficacy, killing only 17% of lice after a 3 hour period, and none after 10 minutes, the recommended time of exposure. Lindane was less effective than prescription malathion, and over the counter pyrethrin and permethrin. Lindane acts on lice by stimulating their central nervous system similar to DDT. Those with lesions on their head can develop central nervous system toxicity if they apply the lotion on the head. This is an obvious concern for the many little children who are applying this lotion on top of their head for the elimination of head lice, which they may have to do twice. Side effects include dizziness, headache, tingling, and seizures.
The use of food products in the removal of head lice is a favorite method. The first food product is thick mayonnaise. Lather it into the hair and wait for fifteen minutes then use a nit comb to comb out the hair. The other method is the use of olive oil. Slather your hair with food grade oil like vegetable or olive oil and leave it on for fifteen minutes, then comb out your hair carefully with a flea or nit comb, wiping the comb on a paper towel after each swipe through your hair. However, most people cannot afford this natural head lice treatment.
