Israeli President Shimon Peres met today (Thursday) with his Egyptian counterpart Hosni Mubarak in Sharm A-Sheikh, Egypt.

This is the first meeting between presidents of the two neighbors since 1994, when then Israeli president Ezer Weitzman met with Mubarak in Cairo.

Peres and Mubarak discussed the advancement of the peace process between Israel and the Arab countries, the strengthening of ties between Israel and Egypt, Israel's kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit, and a variety of other state and security issues that connect the two countries, the Israeli president's press office stated.

In addition, the two discussed the global financial crisis and its possible ramifications for the Middle East.

Peres arrived at the meeting following an invitation from Mubarak on the eve of Jewish Rosh Hashanah (New Year) holiday.

Meanwhile in Jerusalem, an 86-year-old Israeli was stabbed to death by a Palestinian from the Bethlehem District.

The Palestinian also stabbed a policeman and as he began running away a policewoman shot him in the stomach. A civilian who saw the incident chased the wounded attacker and managed to catch him.

The attacker is now being questioned by the police.
