Off the wall? Off track? Off the beaten path? In reading this little book these phrases will surely cross your mind. ´Letters´ is a collection of correspondence between a young man named Sherwood and his fiancée Penelope. It begins about two months after the loving couple has parted and Sherwood is deep in his training in the British Army. The reader here will encounter loneliness, boredom, fear, and maybe deception and sins of omission in the descriptions of Sherwood´s experiences as he lives and learns of life through his chosen sojourn in Army life. On the home front is how Penelope copes with her loneliness by travelling through Europe and her clever descriptions of her encounters. And what about Reginald? How does he fit in with all these goings on? Read this book and find the answers.
Growing up watching the likes of ´Monty Python,´ ´Fawlty Towers,´ and ´Are You Being Served,´ on television, I have to admit having a certain set of expectations when I read the title and the introduction to this little book. Needless to say my expectations were met almost immediately. If a reader has a desire for subtle and very dry humor as opposed to something that is ´in your face´ and patently obvious then this is the book for you. It is written with skill and in a style that is pleasing to the eyes and a refuge for the mind. The reader can´t help but become involved in the adventures of our couple and wonder about the eventual ending. Will Penelope and Sherwood live happily ever after? I won´t tell. The reader has to find this out all alone.
I found this book to be quite satisfying and rewarding despite its brevity. I do highly recommend it for those who do appreciate subtle and sophisticated humor. There is so little of this available today that even small doses are to be treasured and coveted. I do hope Joel Bresler will continue his nascent literary career. I know he has me as a loyal reader.
