Is McCain Heading for Defeat?
In America, poll results show that Obama need another 12 electoral votes to reach the magic figure of 272 to win the election. The projections show that he can win 260 electoral votes against McCain´s 200 but with +5.2 percent overall national lead Democratic Party needs to seek solutions to impending voting machine glitch highlighted in The New York Times editorial, That´s pretty big glitch http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/09/opinion/09thu2.html?ref=opinion.
Similarly, both American and international press is cautioning about race factor that could negatively affect the final result for Obama. However, it is more of a state by state issue than a nationwide phenomenon. There is a general consensus amongst political experts that pocket book issues, health care, education plans will influence American voters.
Obama campaign has to keep reminding hard working taxpayers and average American why Democratic Party is better for them.
Obama should keep telling his voters that he is fighting for the taxpayers and average Americans not against McCain. The results of second Obama-McCain debate show that Republican´s economic plan is not selling and Palin´s strategy to go negative against Obama has also failed.
Economic experts are of the view that historically speaking economic slowdowns favor Democratic Party candidate because average American concerned about pocket book issues looks towards Democrats.
The US economic financial crisis offers a unique opportunity to Obama camp to regain state control over health care, education, financial sector to serve and protect interests of Main Street. Roosevelt initiated sequence of programs with a goal of giving relief to unemployed- collectively known as The New Deal between 1933 and 1938 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_Deal.
The first New Deal of 1933 provided short-term recovery program for all groups. The second New Deal (1935–36) included: labor union support, the WPA relief program, the Social Security Act, and programs to aid farmers (currently 16 bn US dollar subsidy and led to Home Stead law), including tenant farmers and migrant workers. The Supreme Court ruled several programs unconstitutional; however, most were soon replaced, with the exception of the NRA.
Most of the relief programs were shut down during World War II by the Conservative Coalition (i.e. the opponents of the New Deal in Congress). Many regulations were ended during the wave of deregulation in the late 1970s and early 1980s to be replaced by Reaganomics in US.
In 1936, the US Supreme Court despite deciding in favor of Republicans in New Deal judgment(s), up-held several New Deal programs including 19 public welfare programs that are still active in US including The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). The largest programs still in existence today are the Social Security System and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Roosevelt´s socialist capitalism increased govt. control of US economy including regulatory oversight of banking sector, recognize labor unions and their rights. All this allowed creation of social assistance measures on national level that brought prosperity at grassroots and strength at national level.
Roosevelt based his decision on Keynes economic philosophy. The British economist in his book The Economic Consequence of the Peace in 1919 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Economic_Consequences_of_the_Peace supported govt. control of banks, energy sector, communication infrastructure including railway, ships, roads, wages and pensions (opposed contractual system and daily wage), health care and education as part of human resource development.
Democratic Party needs to undo the damage that Bush has inflicted on the working class by imposing union ban during his stay in office. Democrats need to hold Republicans Party and Bush accountable for this gross constitutional violation that resulted in wage suppression, social and economic deprivation of average American. Reportedly, only 1 out of 17 children are entering college with parents´ earning 35,000 dollars annually, which in addition to other factors also reflects failure of corporate sector to discharge its social responsibility. It is also true for 107 million Americans unable to secure health insurance.
Obama needs to keep repeating Democrats message on women rights, protection against sexual harassment, support for rape victims and ´Pro-life´ issue. In addition, Democrats should also address serious issues related to the topic including the one raised by Kristof in ´Can this be Pro-life´ http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/09/opinion/09kristof.html?ref=opinion.
Due to the global economic crisis and globalization there is intense focus on Democrats economic strategy including steps to provide relief to average American, which in turn will be copied by rest of the world especially developing world in Asia and Africa. It is therefore hoped that Obama will use Roosevelt´s tactics to make right decisions including relief at grassroots and holding culprits accountable to end culture of corruption and exploitation at hands of corporations and corrupt govt.s´ in developing world to restore US image. If realized it is a huge challenge for the next US president.
Finally, following results of two debates, poll results and public opinion it is clear that Obama is going to win the national election and become President of America. And McCain is heading for defeat. However, between now and the 7 Nov., Democrat campaign needs to continue connecting with average American by offering solutions to their problems, which McCain has failed to do so far.
