Gordon Brown – Doomed from the start

Ian Brockwell
After waiting in the shadows for such a long time, Gordon Brown probably thought that justice had prevailed when he inherited the PM spot from Tony Blair last year. Unfortunately, dreams don´t always turn out the way we hope sometimes, and this is certainly true in Brown´s case.

It is a fairly safe bet Tony Blair knew what he was doing when he handed over the reins to Brown, perhaps foreseeing the financial problems that we are witnessing now, and the voter´s reaction to it, the timing was perfect.

Blair and Brown are by no means the best of friends and under different circumstances Blair would probably have chosen someone else to step into his shoes. But he probably felt it was better to let Brown take the forthcoming heat and allow a new candidate to become the Labour Party´s "saviour" later.

Could "Blairite" David Miliband be that saviour? Many in the press seem to think so and they have been promoting him as such. But who is Miliband?

According to Wikipedia, Miliband is "the elder son of Polish-born Marion Kozak and the late Belgian-born Marxist theoretician Ralph Miliband." and "Both paternal grandparents lived in the Jewish quarter of Warsaw, before his grandfather, Samuel Miliband, joined the Red Army in the Polish-Soviet War, and after the war moved to Belgium."

Although his earlier education could be considered barely average, he was admitted to "Corpus Christi College, Oxford, where he achieved first class honours in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. He then took an S.M. degree in Political Science in 1990 at MIT, where he was a Kennedy Scholar."

He is quoted as being a "Jewish atheist" and Wikipedia explain this apparent contradiction in the following way:

"Jewish atheism is practiced by atheists who are ethnically Jewish and members of the Jewish people. Because Jewishness encompasses ethnic as well as religious components, the term "Jewish atheism" does not necessarily imply any kind of contradiction. Based on Jewish law's emphasis on matrilineal descent, Orthodox Jewish authorities would accept as fully Jewish an atheist with a Jewish mother"

Does this mean another politician who likes to wear two hats? A person who becomes involved in the politics of his adopted country, yet still holds onto his Jewish roots (although not his religion) and no doubt has strong sympathies towards Israel?

Gordon Brown is considered by many to be a man of morals and honest, but perhaps that is the problem? Clearly, Brown does not fit in the Blair and Bush "Club" and that is an essential qualification at the moment for succeeding in western politics. Brown has tried to play the game by supporting Bush and Israel, but obviously has the wrong "school tie".

Perhaps, if Gordon Brown had stood for what he truly believes in and showed the British public that Britain was not going to become another Iraq, Ukraine or Georgia, maybe things could have been different. But it is no easy task to fight against a NeoCon controlled Media or politicians that are already in the Bush administrations pocket.

The Labour Party conference in Manchester is expected to signal the end of Gordon Brown´s short spell as PM and he will become one of many politicians who fade from the limelight asking themselves "What went wrong?" Sometimes the answer is down to a lack of skill, but in Brown´s situation it will probably be nothing more than a case of his face not fitting and being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The British would use a less technical word to describe his demise, he was "shafted".
