Leading universities offer distance learning facilities in various disciplines to encourage students to partake in completing their education along with a career. Paucity of time to attend regular classes or the greater need to have a career makes many students opt out of regular courses designed in colleges. It is interesting to note that there are several courses offered by leading universities. Many Indian universities like Osmania, MKU and IGNOU have been offering their correspondence courses since many years.

Diploma and degree courses are offered in the correspondence level. The undergraduate course offers Bachelor degrees in Nursing, Hospitality, Tourism, Civil engineering and social works in addition to the contemporary disciplines like arts, commerce and science. Post graduate courses are also offered in education, health, management and medicine. There are advanced diploma courses too in the field of technology, engineering, research, and child care.

It is interesting to note that there are diplomas in mass media, communication, writing, creative writing skills and journalism. Advance courses also relate to political science, library, counseling, and environmental studies. PhD programs are also available in the field of education, developmental studies, and other integrated subjects.

One has to extremely clear about the duration of course and whether tutorials are available. Lectures or practical sessions may or may not be conducted and hence one has to be clear about this while seeking admission. Prospectus and brochures indicate the duration of the course. The student has to also enquire about tentative exam schedules so that one is well prepared.

Correspondence course is a lot about self initiative and discipline. Though one may miss regular class room sessions and interaction with classmates, a study time table will ensure timeliness. Library assistance can be sought to clear doubt or to procure additional notes. The study material is usually sent to the postal address. Preserving the ID card, receipt and roll number is vital for any kind of communication with the university. The commitment towards the course should be high and this is a great way to fulfill educational pursuits.
