Guide to County Fermanagh in Ireland
County Fermanagh is the westernmost of the six counties that form Northern Ireland, and thus the westernmost part of the United Kingdom. It is part of the Irish province of Ulster. Fermanagh is often referred to as Ireland's Lake District because it is dominated by two large lakes, Upper Lough Erne and lower Lough Erne.
Fermanagh only has one border with a fellow county of Northern Ireland, that being County Tyrone to the north-east. The remainder of the county is surrounded by counties of the Republic of Ireland, these being counties Monaghan, Cavan, Leitrim and Donagal. County Fermanagh is also the only county of Northern Ireland that does not border Lough Neagh.
Enniskillen is the county town and by far the largest town in Fermanagh. It is situated centrally within the county between the two large lakes of the River Erne waterway. The population of the town is over 13,000 and the centre provides the main shopping facilities in the region.
Lisnaskea is a large village with a population of around 3,000 people, making it the second largest settlement in Fermanagh.
