Chess, more that being a mere game of skill is a representation of life in medieval ages. From a long time ago the game of Chess was played in countries like China, India, and Persia. In which country the game originated is still a debatable topic. Europeans gave the pieces of the chess set the names we know today as they had difficulty pronouncing the Asian names.

The game of chess represented the very way in which both ordinary people and persons of rank lived their lives in medieval time. There are six different chess pieces on a chess set. The pawns, the castle piece, the knight, the bishop, the queen, and the king. These represent the different strata of society that existed in the medieval times. The pawn on the chess board symbolizes the laborers. They were traded between landlords and were killed in feuds. The castle piece on a chess board represents the abode, or the place of safety.

The pieces on the board characterize a way of life that is no more, and the real life dramas that occurred in medieval times are now only a game. So when you play the game play the medieval life with your chess set.
