SPLIT.....UP!

Joy Avelino-Filipovic
I am not encouraging you to breakup any romantic relationship you may be enjoying at the moment. On the contrary, if you and your loved ones are planning to go on a romantic getaway this summer, you may want to have a feel of Adriatic sea breeze and a touch of Mediterranean spirit, then Split Croatia is a place to be.

Some of you may not have heard of the popularity of Split which is located in the middle part of Dalmatia inhabited by 200,000 people. It is claimed as the 2nd largest city in Croatia next to Zagreb, the country´s capital. From Zagreb, it takes 400 km road trip approximately 4 hour drive from Zagreb. Travelling to Split by car is an easy breezy journey passing through the newly constructed highway that cuts your car drive shorter than what it used to be. On the way to your Split destination, you don´t have to worry about leg cramps, cigarrette and bathroom breaks and early morning java fix, you will have the chance to give yourself a much needed respite from holding the car steering wheel or staring at your car´s bling bling hanging on your front mirror. There are several huge gasoline stations-cum convenient store and coffee bars to fill up your needs. These "stop and go" gasoline stations are located on both sides of the road, so don´t worry on your way back home, you are covered.

In Split´s port area, ships and ferry boats are awaiting for passengers to be transported to neighboring countries such as Italy and Greece. Thereby flocks of foreign and local tourists walk by the vicinity to see the picturesque harbor view. There are numerous hotels, museums, restaurants and ancient historical buildings facing beachfront.

Across the seawharf, an existing old historical building called Diocletian´s palace owned by a Roman emperor is preserved as a tourist spot. Museum adjacent to Diocletian´s palace showcases different relics and historical finds during the Roman Empire. Oh and they sell thousands of souvenir items too for you to bring home.

If you are the type who just prefer to do a lazy afternoon stroll, people watch or shop until you drop kind of relaxation rather than engage in an Indiana Jones ´ artifact discovery, Split provides comfortable benches along the seafront next to a line of palm trees where you can watch the beautiful sunrise and the glorious sunset in the afternoon while savoring a toothsome gelato. The bay walk at the center of the port covered with polished white murmol stone leads you to several shopping stores that sell from Croatian local goods to imported Italian items which is why Split is definitely a girl´s best friend ( this I have confirmed.)

Trekking Split could give you a love at first sight overwhelming feeling especially if you are a traveller as there are lots of amazing things to see and to discover. Long weekends and during summer months could be pretty crowded due to city´s activities during their annual summer festival. Though, it would be ideal if you could plan out your itenerary around Split to make the most out of your stay but a short day trip or an overnight adventure are not bad idea at all.

Why waste time? Don´t take my word for it. Giddy up …pack your bags and start the engine . You ´ll see that it´s well worth the trip!
