Information about Eye Diseases and Eye Problems

If you are thinking that you are too young to have eye problems, think again. Eye problems are not just of the elderly people. In fact, a lot of your people have problems in their eyes and some of them are already on the verge of losing their sight. Although there are some types of eye problems that can be self-treated, some types of eye problems are quite serious that if the suffer do not seek immediate professional help, he or she can actually become blind.
Retinal Detachment
This condition results when the retina detaches from the back of the eye, resulting in vision loss. This typically occurs as a result from a blow to the eye or injury to the head, though at times a person may experience this condition for unknown reasons. People who are near sighted are more at risk for this condition. Participation in contact sports increases ones risk of this condition. Fortunately with prompt treatment retinal detachment can be healed with minimal permanent damage.
Collie Eye Anomaly
Collie Eye Anomaly is an inherited disease characterized by abnormal development of the eye. The condition can be detected by examination of the retina of the eye as early as 5 to 8 weeks of age. Milder cases are characterized by choroidal hypoplasia - lack of development of the choroid which is the vascular layer of the back of the eye, and vascular tortuosity. More severe cases may have patchy areas where the choroid is lacking and bare sclera is visible.
Persistent Pupillary Membranes
Persistent Pupillary Membranes (PPM's) are strands of residual iris tissue important in the development of the iris but which fail to go away after birth. Some PPM's are iris to iris and are harmless other than our concerns about the heritability of the problem. Other PPM's may connect iris to cornea causing a corneal opacity, and in some cases the PPM may connect iris to lens resulting in a cataract.
Inflammation
Inflammation in the eye(s), each part of the eye is subject to each of these categories of problems and, many times, several parts of the eye(s) are involved. For example, pink eye (conjunctivitis) is an eye infection, usually caused by viruses, that is common in children but can affect people of all ages. Contact lens wearers can get inflammation of the eye called contact lens solution toxicity due to sensitivity to the contact lens solution. A corneal abrasion (scratch of the cornea) is the result of injury to the cornea and, depending on the type of injury, may result in recurrent corneal erosion.
Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis is a swelling of the covering that outlines of the eyelids. The signs of this infection are squinting, redness of the lining and discharging of fluids.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma causes a fluid increase, which cause high eye pressure. This can direct to incomplete / half or complete loss of sight. Medication or laser surgeries are used to cure this disease.
