If you have glanced at cable show listings, you know home improvement is a big business. Not only because you want a more beautiful and functional home, but also because remodeling upgrades for kitchens, baths, flooring and outdoor patio space can increase the market value of your home if done properly. When it comes down to it, most of us do not have the time or interest to do larger home improvement projects ourselves…and we don´t have a professional television crew coming in to help. So, how can we find and select from the best Miami businesses and contractors to carry out our projects?

Tip 1: Consider using companies that offer a myriad of services. This reduces the number of different companies working in a small space such as a bathroom or kitchen. For flooring companies and landscape contractors, can they work with a variety of materials that may be called for in your outdoor living space? Working with one company may offer money-saving benefits as well. They can more efficiently keep workers on schedule and order the materials for all of your improvements.

Tip 2: Ask the remodeler or patio company for referrals and photos of recent jobs for clients in the Tucson area. A picture can be worth a thousand words. Do they openly advertise their services and have photos of the driveways, garages and gutter systems they have repaired, built or installed? A home improvement company with happy customers should be able to provide references. Talking with someone who has been through the remodel process will give you a better idea of what to expect from the homeowner´s perspective, as well as give you confidence or raise a warning flag about the home improvement company you are considering.

Tip 3: Consider the "resale" value of bathroom, kitchen, floor or patio projects. Long term use and mass-appeal outweigh trendy, in-the-moment design schemes. Will your kitchen update or bath remodel look move-in ready to future homebuyers? Will it look good to you in five years? Does it have classic appeal or are you putting a little too much of your own personality into it? Let your wilder side show in decorating accessories and paint that are easily changeable as your taste or circumstances change, not in more permanent design elements and furnishings. If you want your family initials in the center stone of your new patio, buy a generic stone at the same time so you can swap it out if you decide to sell the home.

Tip 4: Consider companies for which you have trusted references for their bathroom, kitchen, flooring or patio expertise. Does the contractor have any local violations or poor BBB reports filed against them? Check out Miami remodeling and home improvement companies by entering your Miami zipcode at: www.bbb.org. Do they offer guarantees or warranties for workmanship and products?
