An Infidelity Expert Tells the Story Behind the Valentine´s Day Infidelity Awareness Campaign

Ruth Houston
Most people are unaware of the link between infidelity and Valentine´s Day.

But infidelity expert Ruth Houston set out to change that with her annual Valentine´s Day Infidelity Awareness Campaign, which is now in its 5th year.

Houston, the founder of InfidelityAdvice.com and author of Is He Cheating on You? – 829 Telltale Signs, has single-handedly set out to inform infidelity victims around the world about the link between Valentine´s Day, infidelity and extramarital affairs, and tell them how to use this information to their advantage to get proof of an affair or catch a cheating mate.

The Campaign´s 3-fold Purpose

Houston, an internationally-recognized infidelity expert who is frequently called on by the media to comment on infidelity issues in the news, describes the Valentine´s Day Infidelity Awareness Campaign´s 3-fold purpose.

1. to heighten public awareness of the connection between infidelity and Valentine´s Day

2. to encourage print, broadcast, and online media outlets to do stories, sidebars, or segments on this seldom-discussed side of Valentine´s Day

3. to alert spouses and significant others who suspect infidelity that Valentine´s Day is the best time to get tangible proof of an affair, and to advise them on how to catch a cheating mate.

A New Theme Each Year

Houston chooses a different theme for the Valentine´s Day Infidelity Awareness Campaign each year. The theme for 2008 is How to Catch a Cheater on Valentine´s Day. Previous year´s themes were Valentine´s Day Signs of a Workplace Affair (2007), Valentine´s Day is the Best Time to Catch a Cheating Mate ( 2006), How Valentine´s Day Gifts Can Expose a Cheating Mate (2005), and Is Your Valentine the Cheating Kind? (2004).

Infidelity at a Peak on Valentine´s Day

"People don´t usually associate infidelity with Valentine´s Day." says Houston. "We think of it as a lover´s holiday – the most romantic day of the year. But how romantic can it be if the love affair is between your partner and someone else? Infidelity doesn´t disappear on Valentine´s Day. It´s the time when infidelity and extramarital affairs are at a peak. Cheaters everywhere will be getting together with their secret lovers to give or receive Valentine´s Day gifts. For private investigators who specialize in infidelity investigations, it´s the busiest time of the year."

The Seldom-Discussed Side of Valentine´s Day

Says Houston. "This is a side of Valentine´s Day no one wants to talk about -- even though it affects millions of people everywhere. An estimated 50% to 70% of Americans are victims of infidelity. Factor in emotional infidelity, cyber infidelity, same-sex infidelity and female infidelity, and the number jumps to nearly 85%."

"Many of these people are unsuspecting infidelity victims who don´t even realize they have a cheating mate. One study found that 70% of married women and 54% of married men had no idea their spouse was having an extramarital affair."

"Others may suspect their spouse or significant other of cheating, but have been frustrated in their to get the proof they need. The 2007 iVillage / MSNBC Lust, Love and Loyalty survey found that less than 30% of cheaters get caught.."

Best Day to Catch a Cheating Mate

The National Retail Federation predicts that over $17 billion will be spent on Valentine's gifts this year. A significant portion of that money will be spent by cheaters buying gifts for their secret lovers, and most of these gifts will be delivered in person – either on Valentine´s Day, the day before, or the day after. This makes the Valentine season (February 13 – 15) is the ideal time to catch a cheating mate. There´s a 3-day window of opportunity for anyone who suspects infidelity, to get tangible proof of the affair. But knowing what to look for is the key. Houston provides specific clues on what to look for around Valentine´s Day. She also has an informative tip sheet that´s available year round entitled 21 Ways to Tell if You Have a Cheating Mate. To request a FREE copy, e-mail InfidelityAdvice@gmail.com with "21 ways-ac" in the subject line. Houston´s book, Is He Cheating on You? – 829 Telltale Signs (Lifestyle Publications, $29), has an entire chapter on gift-related signs of infidelity.

How the Campaign Got Its Start

Houston, a New York-based infidelity expert, came up with the idea for the Valentine´s Day Infidelity Awareness Campaign 5 years ago. During the course of her ongoing infidelity research, she discovered that practically nothing had been written about the link between Valentine´s Day and infidelity.

A journalist herself, with a background in public relations, Houston approached the media with this idea: "Instead of your usual Valentine´s Day stories about what gifts to buy and romantic things to do, why not write about "the Other Side of Valentine´s Day" -- the side no one talks about? The 50% to 70% of your readers who are victims of infidelity would appreciate even a sidebar with this information." Many media outlets rose to the challenge.

The Campaign Gathers Momentum

Houston´s Valentine´s Day Infidelity Awareness Campaign gathers momentum with each passing year. Since its inception, the campaign has garnered media coverage all across the United States, and as far away as South Africa, Bahrain, Turkey, India, France, China, Qatar, Viet Nam, Beirut, Pakistan, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Says Houston, It´s gratifying to see all the coverage, but there´s room for so much more."

An Appeal for Balanced Coverage

It´s Houston hope that the Valentine´s Day Infidelity Awareness Campaign will encourage print, broadcast, and online media outlets to present a more balanced view of Valentine´s Day. Houston says, "Valentine´s Day stories about gifts to buy and romantic things to do, still outnumber stories about Valentine´s Day infidelity by at least 5000 to 1. I´d love to see at least one media outlet in every city or town do a feature, sidebar, or segment on Valentine´s Day infidelity this year. From a journalistic point of view, it would provide more balanced coverage of this controversial aspect of Valentine´s Day. From a humanitarian point of view, it would strike fear in the hearts of cheaters everywhere. If more cheaters got caught, people would be less inclined to cheat on their mates."

Houston, who has been happily re-married for almost 8 years now, says "Having been a victim of infidelity myself almost 15 years ago, I´d like to see all those cheaters out there become very, very afraid."
