Mormons and Emergency Food Storage – Supplies Dwindle, Prices Rise as Others Begin Storage

Salt Lake City, Utah – The demand for food storage has never been higher, driving prices up and causing a shortage of foods, according to one of the largest suppliers of food storage in Utah.

Jeff Augason of Blue Chip Group says farmers are changing from raising wheat to growing corn for fuel production. He says this has caused wheat to be harder to get, and the price of wheat has more than doubled in less than a year.

That’s the most significant example, but supplies of all foods are down and the prices are all climbing higher. We have never seen such a high demand for foods that people can store in their homes. We are back-ordered on almost everything because we cannot get the foods as fast as we are getting orders,” said Augason.

Mormons make up many of our customers, but we have mail order customers from all over the world who are not Mormons. Sales through our web site at http://www.FoodStorageIdeas.com have never been higher. People of all faiths are concerned about the future and want to be prepared in case of a disaster,” said Augason.

Blue Chip Group manufactures and packages foods for storage, which is sold in bulk to keep costs down. The company also provides many foods that are gluten free. Augason offers help and suggestions for food storage at www.FoodStorageIdeas.com, as well as information about gluten-free foods at www.GlutenFreeBulkFoods.com.

He said his customers patiently wait several weeks for their orders to be filled, because they are happy to be able to get the things they need.

The threats of natural disasters, economic problems, severe weather, and other emergencies have people investing in food storage items so they can be prepared for tough times. Mormons, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, have been taught for many years that they should store one or two years of food any other supplies. Now people of many other faiths are following their example causing the demand for storage foods to rise sharply.
