Pencil art and shading: The fine art of using the pencil to create pictures is not as simple as most people think it to be. This is because varied technique come into play in order to create the various shaded effects. The first stage of pencil art is learning to make the outline of the sketch. This needs a lot of practice, as it is the outline that will determine the final look of the sketch. Thereafter come the various types of shading.

The types of shading are also defined as the strokes of shading. But before that one should be aware that there are a variety of pencils available for sketching. And the variety is based on the darkness or the shade, which ranges from the lightest gray to the charcoal black pencils. However, some expert artists use maybe two or three pencils from which they can create a larger variety of shaded hues.

Once one is aware of the varied shades of art pencils, then the next stage is understand, or rather get a know-how of the varied strokes used in pencil shadings. These strokes depend on the sketch. However, an important thing to remember is that the shading tends to smudge if one catches the pencil to close to the tip, thereby maintaining contact with the rest of the sketch. Thus, to maintain sharp shaded strokes, one should ensure tat they do not get smudged at all.

There are varied books and publications that teach the fine art of pencil shading. It is all about practice and is one hobby that can also pay if the work is very good. Pencil art portrait artists are known to make lots of money from this art form. Also the pencil caricaturists, who sit at places like malls and exhibitions, tend to earn well with their pencil caricatures of people. However, in order to excel in this form of art, one needs to have patience and practice a lot. After all, perfect makes one perfect.

Face painting: Young children enjoy doing something different to themselves, and their friends. And give them a box of paints and they could use almost any surface to experiment their artistic ways. So, their canvas boards and art paper are not enough. Some of them end up painting each other’s faces during art class, or even their tired father’s face. But taken seriously by adults, face painting is an art form that pays well, at least where the media is concerned.

There are some artists, who practice this art form and have regular exhibitions. And their use is in the visual media to create a different type of impact for the audience. Face painters are used in television, films, advertising and for models for music videos. They not only paint beautiful designs on the various parts of the models’ body, but also do dramatic make up on the face. For instance, a music video requires the feel of ancient Egypt, then the artists not only paint all the models’ being featured with bronze paint to give the authentic look; but the artist also paints the face to create the required features.

In theatre, face painting was all the more common in eras gone by, when the masks had not yet been introduced. The ex-pressions and features painted on the face became the mask for the actors. In fact, it was considered that a characters face should be created over the actor’s face, in order to ensure that actor literally feels as though he/she is ‘in the skin of the character’.

On a more playful note, face painting can become a paid-for-hobby, for children’s birthday parties and during international sporting events. There are people who sit outside the stadium and paint the faces of the spectators in accordance to their demand. Usually, they want the flag of the nation they are supporting to be painted on their face.

Making balloon animals: Whether a birthday party, or then just simply a day out, it could be a lot of fun carrying balloons of various shapes and sizes for the young ones. In fact, making objects out of balloons could be entertaining and help in the physical development of the hands and fingers. Objects like balloon animals works as an aid in teaching children about the varied animals, and also becomes a class activity for older children – between the age of seven and twelve years. Making balloon animals is not as difficult as it may seem. Firstly, one should remember that on has to blow the balloon only half way through and not the entire balloon. This is because the balloon needs to be twisted in various places in order to take the shape of the animal.

Given here is the method of preparing a balloon crocodile: Blow up the balloons to 50% of its capacity. Tie a knot. Then twist a 3-inch bubble. Use both hands to twist it three times. Hold onto the twisted balloon and simultaneously make one more bubble 2 fingers in size, which will form one eye. Then make another balloon bubble of the same size, which will be the other eye. Twist balloon joints times together. This should be three times, going all the way around. For the neck twist a 2-inch bubble. For the front legs twist a 3-inch bubble. And twist it onto the body of the balloon crocodile. Repeat the same for other front leg, as well as the hind legs. Using a felt-tip pen you can artistically create features of the crocodile.
