In preparation for their inaugural seasons, expansion rivals the Edmonton Rush and Portland LumberJax squared off in a scrimmage this past weekend at Rexall Place in Edmonton. The LumberJax squeaked past the Rush 9-8 as the West Division foes looked to work out some bumps before they take the turf for real when their seasons begin in January. The contest gave both oppositions the chance to take a good look at each other as they will meet up three times in 2006.

Portland was led by No. 1 Draft Pick Brodie Merril in the victory, as the rookie defenseman notched two goals and collected approximately 25 loose balls. “Brodie was dominant at both ends of the floor and great in transition,” said LumberJax General Manager and Head Coach Derek Keenan.

Seven other LumberJax each added a goal for Portland including Del Halladay, Richard Morgan, and Scott Stewart.

Veteran goaltender Dallas Eliuk saw his first action as a member of the LumberJax playing the first half of the scrimmage and allowing only three goals. “He looked sharp in his first action for us,” said Keenan. “It’s comforting to know we have that veteran experience in goal heading into the season.”

It was a good test for both teams,” said Keenan. “The game was very competitive. Both teams were really into it and both played hard.”

The Edmonton Rush were led by forward Jimmy Quinlan who netted two goals in the contest. The rest of the Rush scoring was spread out between Kyle McEwen, Colin Sherbanuk, Brad Dairon, Cam Bergman, Jordan Cornfield, and Jamey Bowen who each scored one goal.

The Edmonton Rush will begin their season at home on January 6th when they host the San Jose Stealth at 7:30 PM Mountain at Rexall Place.

The Portland LumberJax will see their first regular season action on January 13th when they head to Arizona to battle the Sting at 7:30 PM Mountain at Glendale Arena.
