MISS UNIVERSE CANADA 2008 CONTESTANT CO-AUTHORS SOON-TO-BE POPULAR BOOK “PENIS ENVY”

Peter Andrew Sacco, Ph.D.
Do you have penis envy, or do you know of anyone who has it? Do you even know what in the world penis envy is? Well, let me start out by saying I took along look down a loaded barrel to see first hand what penis envy was and who might have it. It sure as heck was a lot better than say, looking down some dudes Joe Boxer undies or spying the banana hammock at the beach also known as the Speedo!

I was fortunate to co-author this funny, yet very insightful book with Jennifer Schott who is a contestant in the Miss Universe Canada 2008 beauty pageant. The book is officially due out in August of this summer, but from the critics and readers we have allowed to read it, the reviews have been gut-busting great thus far. As a matter of fact, we have had dozens of women point and groan, “hmmm, hmmm, I know that guy, that’s my husband!”

What is penis envy? For starters, it was a syndrome of sorts the great Psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud attributed to women who wished they could be men. Many people mistake Freud’s premise for what penis envy was intended to entail by taking it for it’s denotation of “wanting to possess an actual penis”. Well, for some, we’re sure they might want to possess it in more ways than one, even when they already have one, but I am not going there. Perhaps what Freud was really driving home was the connotative meaning of penis envy by referring to it as equality, affirmative action… being on the same playing field as men. Remember, Freud came from a time when women were viewed less than men. Wouldn’t you want to feel equal if you were a woman, or even a man who felt less than other men? Ah, that leads us to Penis Envy: Does Size Really Matter Or Is It The Size Of The Matter?

The books is really, truly about men who possess penis envy,” says Schott. “It’s about men who feel they are lacking in the ‘size matters’ department figuratively and even literally.”

Penis Envy: Does Size Really Matter Or Is It The Size Of The Matter? examines a host of qualms and idiosyncrasies many men in today’s society possess. “There are so many silly things men do which make them look even sillier,” says Schott.

Most of the research from Penis Envy came from interviews from both women and men, and were matched up and measured with Freud’s Psychosexual stages of personality development. Instead of putting women through the process of determining whether or not and why they have penis envy, we wanted to prove just as many men if not more possess it as well too!

There were many areas which struck our fancy and made us laugh when doing research for this book,” says Schott. “My co-author had loads of e-mails sent to him from women in relationships as well as single women who claimed they knew men or witnessed men who possessed some kind of penis envy.”

How can a man who already possesses a penis possess penis envy? They feel less of a man when comparing themselves to their peers and feel the need to emasculate themselves in a sense of machismo, or hide behind some bizarre façade. And what might these bizarre facades be? “There were a whole host of the strange and unusual women, and even some men claimed men do which make them the recipients of penis envy,” says Schott.

We looked at what the interviewees gave us and we were able to pigeonhole them into categories and fit them into a Freudian framework…sort of,” Schott says with a chuckle. “It was like fitting square pegs into circular holes, and triangles into square pegs, but they all fit in the end,” says Schott. And fit they did! In the end, the first readers of the book were treated to fits of laughter and “hmmm, hmmms!”

How can you not laugh at a book about men which explains:

Why some adult men still live at home with their parents?

Why some adult men are attached to mom at the hip…and breast?

Why some men wear clothes and bathing suits that are 1, 2 & 3 sizes too small

Why some men feel the need to “stuff” themselves?

How some men are gay and just don’t know it?

Why some men dress like women…Metrosexuals?

Why some men show off their enormous breasts and bellies?

Why some women try extra “hard” to look like men?

Why some men are obsessed with sports or “in love” with their cars?

How to determine if your best friend is a clinger or cling-on?

PENIS ENVY answers these questions along with the million dollar question which has haunted “mankind” for centuries…Does size really matter? The Vagina Monologues taught us that women have something important to say. Guess what? Women still have something important to say when discussing the penis. Maybe we should have titled our book the Penis Monologues. Nah, who would listen?

In the weeks to follow, I will do a series on the chapters featured in this wonderful, hilarious book. In the meantime, we’ll watch as Jennifer continues her Miss Universe Canada 2008 competition and works on her awesome magazine Vices: The Magazine For Addictions, Habits And Well-Being which continues to help those with addictions and mental health problems around the world.
