Neither Brothers nor Muslims- Credo Analysis

Dr. Eyad Harfoush
“God is our Goal, Prophet is our Leader, Quran is our Constitution, and Martyrdom is our most Precious Wish”

This is the famous credo of “Muslim Brotherhood” (MB) since founded in 1928 till now, analyzing it; we shall find the seeds of violence and fanaticism lying deep within the apparently acceptable and peaceful credo, we can summarize the violence seeds in the following points,

1- “God is our Goal”

When a man claims that God is his goal, he is giving a divine nature to his human non-divine activities and behavior. All ways that might lead to his most holy goal can be considered legal and ethical then, as he is in a divine mission to materialize God’s well on land, blood shedding will not be excluded from the agenda of such a man who believe being in his way to the most almighty God.

Apart from this shining statement in their credo, the real overall goal of MB based on their history has been always to reach power and establish their own theocratic state. As we will see in coming articles, their Machiavellian history clearly demonstrates their lust to power to be superseding even their religious principles whenever necessary.

2- “Prophet is our Leader”

Setting Prophet “Mohamed” (Peace be upon him) to be their leader, will essentially link all their practices to “Sunnat” of the prophet (pbuh). Yet, their practice was proven to be very far from this glossy slogan, for example, prophet was never to agree to the deal their prime leader “Omar Telmisany” held with “Sadat”, to set MB members free, and empower them to counteract leftist streams in Egyptian universities and societies, in return MB should always respect “Sadat” and never criticize his autocratic practices. This sort of satanic settlements is obviously far from prophet’s guidance.

3- “Quran as a constitution”

Here a fundamental question must be answered, is Quran a constitution by itself or a holy book, from his spirit we can derive constitutions?

As we all know, constitutions in today’s world is a term explaining a written document defining the fundamental political and economic principles, and establishing the structure, procedures, powers and duties of a government. Also it guarantees certain rights to the nationals in the society. All these meanings are available broadly in Quran. Yet, a deriving process must be undertaken to transform it into a constitution document clearly answering the major political, economic and civil questions about the society.

Moreover, while Quran is applicable for all Muslims, a constitution based on the spiritual content of Quran must vary from country to another, you can never set the same roles in a mono-religious society (e.g. Iran and Turkey) and a multi-religions society (e.g. Egypt and Lebanon). After all, who uses the term constitution of Quran is limiting the capacity of a holy book, and widening his maneuvering abilities to avoid abidance by a clear document that tolerates no more than one explanation, while Quran can be a subject of diversified explanations. An example about this maneuvers from Ikhwan history, is the scandal of “Ahmed El-Khazendar” assassination, firstly their leader and founder “Hassan Al-Banna” denied the involvement of MB in the case. Later, when it was proven to be undertaken by one of their fellows, in response to direct orders of “Abdel-Rahman Al-Sanady”, the leader of Ikhwan militia by that time, the brotherhood had an internal court where “Sanady” was trialed, their decision was considering it as unintended murder, which is not only against Islamic principles, but against the simplest principles of logic.

4- “Martyrdom is our most Precious Wish”

Talking about martyrdom, we must ask the MB, who is a martyr in their perception?

The pilot who attacked the WTC in September 11th was definitely considering himself as a martyr. Those of “Ommat Al-Islam” militia in Lebanon are talking martyrdom, same applies to those “brothers” of “Al-Qaeda” in Afghanistan. While a martyr in the widely accepted meaning is a person who is put to death in defense of a belief, principle or cause, or who dies for a nation's glory, rights or honor during wartime. In this definition, “defense” is a key word that sets all the previous categories outside martyrdom umbrella as they are in a state of attacking others and initiating violence.

MB is requested to answer, which martyrdom they set as the most precious wish? There answer will help understanding the depth of violence in their ideology and perceptions. Whatever their answer can be, we shall see in our coming article how their history clearly demonstrates their misperception of martyrdom and “Jihad”
