Jetblue Aircraft Successfully Makes Emergency Landing at LAX
The plane had left Burbank's Bob Hope Airport at 3:17 p.m. for John F. Kennedy Airport in New York. The Airbus A320 had a problem with its two front wheels, which were turned sideways after takeoff and unable to retract. The plane returned to circle over the ocean and LA basin, dumping and burning fuel before attempting the landing.
Fire personnel and medical technicians were on hand to minimize the impact of the emergency. The plane was diverted to Los Angeles because that airport is the best equipped in the area to handle such crises. Aviation experts indicated that the pilots had been properly trained to handle similar emergencies and indicated that there was very little to worry about. Nevertheless, they agreed that the landing was a risky and unpredictable situation.
Emergency crews approached the aircraft and assisted in the disembarkation. Jetblue is based out of Long Beach, California.
