Britney Spears – Not yet a woman?

Ian Brockwell
Britney Spears has apparently “successfully” completed her treatment in a rehab clinic after one month, and her manager has asked that the media “respects her privacy”.

Unfortunately, one of the problems of achieving fame, is that you are constantly under the spotlight and your every move recorded for the world to see. This is not helped of course when you stroll into a beauty salon and shave your own head, get drunk in public places, let your child sit on your lap when driving a car, or get photographed in a nightclub when you aren’t wearing underwear!

It is easy for us to be critical of such actions, but perhaps we forget sometimes that her fame came at an early age and at a time when most of us are discovering ourselves. We have to try and imagine how our own lives would have been, if we had become equally famous at her age, living a life without any secrets.

Perhaps the words from one of her songs “not yet a woman” explains the real problem? Like many other celebrities that have obtained their fame at a young age, she was unable to experience the steps to becoming an adult in the same way others do.

This was very noticeable when she was expecting her first child (Sean Preston) and her comments about pregnant sex being “the best” showed up her sexual immaturity. Sadly, her inexperience with men was probably a major factor in her choice of a husband (Kevin Federline), who had left a young child behind in a previous relationship and had a history of doing this. Britney was almost certainly advised not to marry this man and no doubt given plenty of reasons why she shouldn’t. But this was perhaps her first real relationship, and who listens to advice in these situations?

Hopefully, she will learn from her mistakes and the experience will make her stronger and wiser. She is going to need plenty of help over the next few months to adjust to the recent changes in her life, and time to catch up on some of those lost years.

I think, if all goes well, Britney’s fans will see her make a very successful comeback. But don’t be surprised if this time you see a different image, new music, and a woman!
