Humane Society: Claims of Horse Abandonment Are Outrageous and Contrived
Claims that thousands of horses have been abandoned are outrageous and contrived ("Kentucky overrun with unwanted horses," 3/15). This is the latest trick from hired lobbyists for the slaughter industry to reverse the momentum to ban the inhumane practice of killing healthy horses for human consumption.
Members of the Kentucky Animal Care and Control Association recently disputed the claims at its annual meeting, attesting that they have recorded no accounts that validate the industry's hype.
Adoption, sale, and humane euthanasia by a licensed veterinarian are viable options for horses owners who want to relinquish their animals. Let's face the fact that the horse slaughter industry has a financial interest in proffering the myth that a slaughter ban translates into thousands of unwanted horses.
The American Horse Slaughter Protection Act, H.R. 503 and S. 311, would protect American horses from this barbaric and self-interested industry. We urge Congress to pass this legislation.
