They Don't Get It

John H. Adler
We live in troubled times. Many of our problems are self inflicted. The causes are easy to understand and remedies clear.

We have the power and privilege to express our opinions by our votes.

But too many people just don’t get it!

The United States of America leads by the worst possible example.

How strange that the majority of the American public just doesn’t get it!

Nowhere in the civilized world are civilians permitted to carry arms unless they have specific reasons to do so. Thanks to the unbelievable political power of the NRA, almost anyone within the USA can obtain a license to purchase a gun.

Yet, the majority of the American public just doesn’t get it!

Is it so hard to understand that our entire nation suffers from the ready availability of arms?

Why, and for what purpose, are we arming ourselves?

For self defense? Bull! Before you pull your gun, you’re dead.

For sport? Buy a hunting gun and keep it in a safe place when not using it. Apply a lock, or whatever it takes, to immobilize weapons. Put them where children can’t reach them.

What possible legitimate reason can there be for owning an automatic handgun?

Surely our forefathers did not intend to create a country filled with potential murderers. When the law to bear arms was enacted, this entire country was the “Wild West.” But we grew up and we like to think of our society as being “civilized”.

In some states it is permissible to carry concealed, or even openly displayed, weapons. Have we become a nation of vigilantes?

We incur daily shootings in our streets. Our country is beleaguered by gangs, all armed, not only with handguns but with military weaponry. It is not unusual that the police are outmatched by gang armament.

But gangs are not our only problem. Family feuds, love gone awry, robberies by children or any emotional breakdown can result in intended or accidental death by virtue of easily available firearms. Kids in their teens feel they are supermen when they have a gun in their hands. In their immature minds and judgment, they feel invincible.

The arms business is an international, multi-billion dollar business. In the United States, it finances the opposition to any plausible, intelligent domestic arms control. The NRA is their agent, and I believe that their political clout is such that they are able to vote out of office any of our legislators promoting gun control.

Is there still hope that the people of our country will come to their senses? Will they ever say,

“We finally got it!”
