Goodbye Doc -- Hunter S. Thompson's Funeral

Steve Wilemon
Five, four, three, two, one, blastoff! Forgive me for the countdown but Saturday night Hunter S. Thompson’s ashes were shot from a huge fist shaped Gonzo cannon that had been placed at the top of a mountain like hill on Thompson’s property at Owl Farm near Woody Creek CO. All of Thompson’s friends, family, ex co-workers, lovers, and secret admirers that snuck their way into the event, gathered round for a celebration of the late authors life.

I wish myself that I could have been there to witness the celebration along with Johnny Depp, and Sean Penn, and all the other wonderful celebrities. It was undoubtably one of the best so called “funerals” known to man in recent years if you ask me.

This was Thompson’s final flight. As his ashes were loaded into separate capsules along with explosives and fireworks, then shot out of the fist shaped canon during the most triumphant moment of the celebration. All this was done by way of Thompson’s last request which he had made clear to anyone close to him long before his suicide earlier this year. This is the way he wanted everyone to remember him and to celebrate his life, with one final goodbye, one last Gonzo indevor. He loved guns and explosives and now he is one. Hooray Doc, your wish is granted.
