TRUTH IN ADVERTISING

Susan Elaine Wheeler
How many companies are making huge profits from unreliable and unhealthy products that are advertised on TV? Prescription drugs, OTC drugs, GMO, processed foods, products that are For Sale but without proper testing.

Americans need to know that we can rely on our government to provide the checks and balances required to guarantee our safety and know that we can trust the advertisements we see. No product should ever be accepted for broadcast without clear evidence that guarantees not to harm our health and safety.

I bet you thought the FDA was testing and/or requiring proper outside testing from these companies before products are made available, but over the last couple decades the FDA didnīt receive the proper funding to do their job correctly and that depleted their authority and power.

Consumers have become the test group for drugs and food products with side effects ranging from headaches to death. As long as itīs stated in the fine print, drug companies continue to get away with it by paying fines equal to one dayīs profit or a few months.

New York Times, Duff Wilson wrote on April 26, 2010 that drug company, "AstraZeneca becomes the fourth pharmaceutical giant in the last three years to admit to federal charges of illegal marketing of antipsychotic drugs, a lucrative category of medications that have quickly risen to the top of United States sales charts. Aggressive sales and promotional practices have helped expand the use of powerful new antipsychotic drugs for children and the elderly. AstraZeneca has completed a deal to pay $520 million to settle federal investigations into marketing practices for its blockbuster schizophrenia drug, Seroquel.

Dr. Joseph Mercola comments in his newletter May 10, 2010, "AstraZeneca was accused of misleading doctors and patients by spotlighting favorable research while failing to adequately disclose studies showing that Seroquel increases the risk of diabetes. Last month the case of Pfizer, the worldīs largest pharmaceutical company, was "punished" with a fine that amounted to three monthīs worth of profit for the illegal marketing of the painkiller Bextra. Nevertheless, that is what happens when your profits are so large you can afford to lobby and payoff the right people in government, to effectively insulate you from any prosecution."

The FDA doesnīt require testing on GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) even though the manufacturers have received patents on the seeds. The FDA doesnīt require labeling on products using GMO so you donīt know which foods are GM.

Jeffery Smith with Responsible Technology says, "There are a number of dangers in eating GM foods that broadly fall into the categories of potential toxins, allergens, carcinogens, new diseases, antibiotic resistant diseases and nutritional problems. For more info on GMO see link below.

Eat organic foods and eliminate processed foods from your intake and you wonīt have to worry about eating GMO.

When did we lose Truth in Advertising in this country? A citizen of the United Sates use to think the govīt was regulating and protecting their citizens but not any more. We are subjected to stupid human trickery and buyer beware instead of a culture that values integrity. Common sense went missing about the same time Truth in Advertising ceased to exist. Thereīs so much propaganda and spin daily that even the people trying to do whatīs best, get confused with whatīs true.

Our government officials are manipulated daily by special interests and lobbyist who are NOT concerned with the health, education or sustainability of our country but how they can pay to get their agenda approved. Our children are growing up in a country of chaos where greed and profit controls decisions not health and safety. Americans pay the most for health care and are among the sickest people in the world. The health of our country is at stake because dishonesty has taken over.

We all have compassion for our family, friends, neighbors and the six degrees of separation that separates us from everyone else until we show up at work and then for some crazy reason compassion becomes irrelevant. Business is personal, it affects all our lives and we need to start making our health and safety a priority. Each citizen of this country is a consumer and needs to be guaranteed that products have been completely tested and are reliable before they're on the market For Sale and advertised.

Restoring integrity to the decision making process and sharing respect for each other so weīre achieving our best at being the best and not hurting each other for profit.
