Classic Championship Wrestling - Event Wrap-up 10.24.06

Thomas Keister
The unseasonably cool weather didn't dampen the mood of the CCW faithful, as they filled the CCW Arena to standing room only within minutes of bell time. The promotion has been undergoing quite a few changes as they prepare to launch a weekly television broadcast, and the quality of the action has been nothing short of phenomonal as the holiday season is right around the corner.

Live action kicked off with Elmore Fudd, accompanied by Mrs. Elma Fudd, who made her presence known immediately by trying to intimidate referee James Hardin early. Matt Maverick, who has been showing great promise in the last couple of weeks, entered the ring next looking for another impressive showing. Finally, The Regulator would hit ringside to round out the Triple Threat match to start the show.

This match did not allow for much in the way of an easy pick to win, as all three are more than capable competitors. Whether it was the size and strength of Regulator, the experience and toughness of Fudd, or the speed and resilience of Matt Maverick, an argument could be made for any choice for the winner here.

The match opened with Maverick and Fudd double teaming Regulator, looking to remove him as a factor right off the bat. This, however, wold not be the case, as Regulator would dump Fudd to the outside, and then take over on Maverick. The Fudds were no doubt plotting their next move as Elmore caught his breath. Convincing Maverick to again double team Regulator. After several successful exchanges, Maverick would attempt the pin, only to have Fudd drag him off. As the partnership quickly dissolved, Fudd would win his end of the argument, nailing a spinebuster on Maverick. Returning to focus on the big man from Detroit, Fudd tested the limits of the referee's patience by choking away on Regulator. Not down and out just yet, Regulator would mount a comeback, highlighted by a big chokeslam on Maverick. However, Fudd was there to break up the near fall. Looking to score on Regulator's handiwork, Fudd locked Maverick in for a suplex, only to have the young star reverse into a small package and take the match! This is Maverick's second big win in the last three weeks, and it looks like the perseverance is starting to show signs of paying off for Matt Maverick. Keep an eye on him in the coming weeks.

"Smooth" Johnny Spade and Ms. Hollywood then came out, with Spade looking to address the crowd following the controversial no contest in last week's CCW Championship Tournament Finals match. The crowd was just as eager to hear the current state of affairs as they are to see the champion crowned October 27 at the Halloween Supershow. For tonight, they would have to settle for another top notch preview, as Spade would be teaming with "The Black Redneck" Kliff Hanger against Dynamite Derrick and The Prophet, two men with huge grudges against Spade, not the least of which is Derrick's still just being a hair away from being CCW Heavyweight Champion. As Spade introduced Kliff, and the sounds of Loretta Lynn filled the CCW Arena, there was neither sight nor sound of the eclectic superstar. The answer would soon present itself, as Dynamite Derrick's music took over, signaling the arrival of the "Old School Player," along with the Prophet. Derrick then took great pleasure in informing Spade and the crowd that Kliff Hanger was, in fact, not going to be able to make the show. How he knew that is anyone's guess, but I could probably tell you nine of ten fan's theories before you ask them about it.

This sudden revelation would bring Commissioner Chris Alexander into the fold. Alexander said that not only was he to blame for Kliff Hanger's absence, but Derrick could only blame himself for not being the CCW Heavyweight Champion as they stood in the ring at that very moment. Spade would present the idea of Alexander taking Kliff's place in the match, and after some careful (if brief) deliberation, the Commissioner heartily agreed, and the main event was on again! The stakes were definitely being raised with the CCW Title return match this Friday, and the match had every bit of potential for a sensational preview.

Singles action was up next, as Apollo of the HNIC, along with Akasha, made his by-now legendary Portland entrance, taking just a moment to help the CCW faithful feel the love, HNIC-style, only some technical difficulties would prove to be a bit of a challenge. The crowd was not overly disappointed in this, as they already well know how Apollo feels about wrestling in Portland.

Also presenting a challenge was Apollo's opponent, Guido Andretti of the Brute Squad. Conspicuous by his absence was Ricky Stonewall, but I was assured later by the Brute Squad that Stonewall is elbow deep in some kind of deal, and that he would be back in no time. The cagey veterans took a minute to get the pace of the match established, driving the ref to near fits with their antics. After several attempts to pin abuse of the ref on the other, he was forced to threaten disqualifying both men before the match had really even gotten underway!

As the match finally got started, both men looked to gain control, only that was easier said than done. The match was not in any danger of being named a scientific classic, but the fast pace spoke well to the ring instincts of both men. Add in the ringside presence of Akasha, and you see where this could head, if given the right chance.

However, before anyone knew what was happening, Bad Medicines #6 & 9, along with Tim the Baker, stormed the ringside area, with the Bad Medicines flanking the sides as Tim the Baker attacked Akasha. In the confusion, Guido, using the aforementioned ring presence, scored the win using a handful of tights. This would only be the start of the mayhem involving the CCW tag team division for the evening.

Speaking of the Bad Medicines, #6 was right back out, once again with Tim the Baker & Bad Medicine #9, looking to score a big win in one-on-one competition against Jack Black of the Fat N The Furious. With the tag team scene quickly reaching the breaking point, one can only imagine the level of intensity in the back as this match was ready to kick off.

Black, no doubt thinking three moves ahead leading up to the big 4-way match to determine the inaugural CCW Tag Team Champions October 27, made it more than clear in the beginning that he was not going to put up with any of Tim the Baker's antics. While Bad Medicine #6 tried to hang on, it was all Black from the opening bell. As Tim tried to regroup his masked clients, the plan would soon become all too apparent. The Switcheroo! Using this classic from the masked wrestler playbook after #9 tripped Black from the ring apron, the Bad Medicines would pour on the abuse, almost wearing themselves out trying to do the same to the powerhouse of the FNF. As Black would find out, the numbers game on this ocassion would simply prove too great. Dealing with Tim the Baker and the extra Bad Medicine, Black never saw it coming. Of course, they never do, otherwise these stories would turn out differently.

Apollo of the HNIC would take advantage of the distracted referee to devastate Black with a chair shot, allowing Bad Medicine #6 to score an unprecedented pin and nab the biggest solo win of his career, at least to date in CCW! Know now that there will most assuredly be revenge dealt on Friday night in regards to this encounter!

Live action resumed from intermission with more singles action, as Bad Medicine #9 looked to keep the incredible good fortune rolling, being led out by Tim the Baker (see what I mean? Ever-present). The trio was obviously feeling good about themselves, having already dispatched Matt Maverick last week, and Jack Black this week...thus far. JB Thunder, representing the HNIC, came to the ring not only with Akasha, but with more bad mood than usual. The mood was still simmering from the Apollo fiasco earlier. Payback was now on Thunder's mind, and he didn't care who was on the receiving end!

As both men struggled to gain an edge early on, the thinking fan had their money on JB Thunder. While Bad Medicine #9 is a more than capable brawler, when need be, he is just not in the same category as Thunder. Given the prior events of the evening, it was surprising to see just Akasha at ringside, as Apollo remained in back, obviously still trying to recover. Having fairly good knowledge of this team over the years, I'd put nothing past them, and for good reason, as the HNIC always has a reason, whether or not they choose to let you know about it.

Bad Medicine #9 took the lead, pushing the rules to the very limit as he tried repeatedly to put Thunder down for good. Thunder would find his second wind, although it would open the door for more shenanigans by the Bad Medicines, as they attempted to pull off another switch on Thunder. This time, however, The Brute Squad would run out and reverse the switch throwing #9 back into the ring where Thunder would hit a Pumphandle Buster for the pin.

"The Illustrious" K-Lo hit ringside with a purpose, ready to square off with Vito Andretti from the Fat N The Furious, but unsure of what to expect, given the utter chaos reigning in the tag team division at present. While Andretti is one-half of unarguably CCW's most popular tag team, over the last several weeks, The Brute Squad, represented by K-Lo, has simply been the hottest team in Classic Championship Wrestling.

Andretti started off with a high-impact, smash-mouth style that left K-Lo reeling. Turning the tables, K-Lo would resort to more off-the-record tactics to batter Andretti and firmly establish himself on offense, scoring a couple of near-falls before a missed top-rope legdrop ignited a comeback by Andretti, at which point Guido ran out to break up the pin. This also ignited the highly combustible scene brewing all night long, as Jack Black, The Bad Medicines, Tim the Baker, The HNIC, and Akasha would all storm the ring for a flat-out melee. Now, imagine the scene Friday night, October 27, as all four teams are back in the ring, only this time with the CCW Tag Team Championship on the line! Commissioner Chris Alexander may want to think about assigning extra personnel to keep a thumb on this one!

The evening's main event featured the latest collision between "Smooth" Johnny Spade and Dynamite Derrick, as they found each other in a big tag team showdown, with Spade now teaming with Chris Alexander to battle "The Old School Player" Dynamite Derrick and The Prophet. While the CCW Heavyweight Title will be decided this Friday, you know Spade and Derrick were both looking to score a big victory for momentum heading into the showdown.

Alexander and Prophet started the match out, with Prophet managing to power Alexander to his corner, tagging in Dynamite Derrick to continue double-teaming the Commissioner. Escaping with a double clothesline, Alexander made the tag to Spade, which in turn meant it was Derrick's turn to escape. When they locked up, it was all Derrick, however, until Spade recovered to knock him to the floor. This was the moment Miss Hollywood was waiting for, as she proceeded to light up the Old School Player with a series of chops!

As good as everything was going, a missed tag would spell disaster for Spade and Alexander, as Derrick and Prophet took solid control, scoring several near-falls on Alexander. Spade, helpless, could only watch from the corner as Prophet punished Alexander, who showed great resilience in the face of an unrelenting attack.

As the match wore on, Derrick and Prophet were putting on a clinic in ring control, cutting Chris Alexander from a desperately-needed tag, baiting Spade at just the right moments to intensify the beating they were dealing the Commissioner. Some of the fans looked as though they wondered how much more Alexander could handle. Literally, just as I was originally writing that line, Alexander broke through and managed to tag in Spade! Exploding out from his corner, Spade took the fight to both men single-handedly, allowing Alexander a moment to catch his bearings and rejoin the fight.

As order threatened to break down, Prophet grabbed Miss Hollywood as referee James Hardin tried to separate Alexander. Before the warrior chief could unleash whatever vicious plan he had in store for Miss Hollywood, he turned around and met a Johnny Spade superkick. As Derrick came to rescue, Spade would hit a big spinebuster to set up the Spadeton. Connecting, Spade made the pin, no doubt looking forward to doing the same thing Friday night with championship gold on the line. The fans, enjoying a second big show this week as CCW prepares to enter a brief Halloween hiatus, were buzzing on the way out following the show, and I'm sure the subjects will change, but the topic is one thing only, and that's what to expect next at a Classic Championship Wrestling live event!

Classic Championship Wrestling will present a Halloween Supershow this Friday night at the CCW Arena, 3327 Northwestern Parkway in Louisville, Kentucky. Both the CCW Heavyweight and Tag Team Championships will be decided. Doors open at 7:00pm, with a bell time of 7:30.
