Montana Poker - Texas Holdem River

Olivia J Halvorsen

Texas holdem is a variation of poker that is probably the most popular of all poker variations. It is played with each player dealt two hole cards or pocket cards and five community cards. The five community cards are comprised by the flop, the turn, and the river, and each of them are shared by each player in order to make the best five card poker hand.

The fifth community card, which is the river, is dealt face up on the board at the center of the table just like all the rest of the community cards. If you make it to the river, then it probably means that you have the best hand. This is because you will not see the river card unless you either have a strong hand that is a favorite to win or you have a draw to a winning hand. Once the river card is turned over, you know exactly what you have. From this point, all of the potential value of your hand is turned into realized value. You can no longer improve your hand. Instead, you can force out, fold, or showdown.

Here are some tips on playing the river in Texas holdem poker:

You should base all your decisions on whether to bet, fold, call, raise, or re-raise on the realized value of your hand. If you´ve made two pair, for instance, keep in mind that it will usually win unless the river brings a third suited card. In this case where a third suited card comes out, you should be extra careful because you may now have a flush threat against you.

The Texas holdem river is the last of the five community cards. If you make it to the river, then know that you are one step closer to winning the poker game.
