Classic Championship Wrestling - Event Wrap-up 9.12.06

Thomas Keister
Despite thunderstorms dotting the Ohio valley Tuesday, by 7 pm the growing fan base of classic championship wrestling had braved the elements to ensure yet another sold-out house at the CCW Arena. The evening opened on a somber note with a 10 bell salute and moment of silence for the father of “Smooth” Johnny Spade, who had passed away suddenly the day before. The talent and staff of CCW, as well as myself are keeping Spade and his family in our thoughts and prayers.

Vito Andretti then greeted the crowd with a brief salute to the memory of September 11 before the National Anthem was played.

And it was show on from that second forward as Guido Andretti and “The Illustrious” K-Lo hit ringside, trailed by their manager, the ever-present Tim the Baker. In the blink of an eye, however, the tag team had berated and fired their manager, immediately introducing newcomer Ricky Stonewall as their new representative. While Tim was incensed, the anger quickly turned to self-preservation as Stonewall chased him from the ringside area with a chair. I approached Tim later in the evening for a comment, but let's be honest here, people...the guy needs subtitles or something. More on this situation as it becomes available. In the long run, I feel this will be a good move for K-Lo and Guido. They had found success with Tim the Baker in their corner, but Ricky Stonewall has shown a killer instinct, if anything, and this new partnership is already making noises about CCW starting a tag team championship (if only to simply HAND the belts to them). Expect bigger and better things from this trio in the upcoming future.

The evening's in-ring action kicked off with Elmore Fudd, accompanied by Mrs. Elmore Fudd, looking to make a statement of his own with a successful first round showing in the CCW Championship tournament. While I've been impressed with Fudd in the weeks since starting this column, he had no short order in his opponent, Jack Black of the Fat and the Furious. While currently half of one of the most successful tag teams on the scene in Kentuckiana and Tennessee, Black is definitely no stranger to singles action.

While Fudd may have had some tricks in store for Black, the much larger and stronger Black was having none of it, forcing Fudd to rely on brawling tactics to try and hold his own. Mrs. Fudd nearly found herself in the middle of the ring, as her ringside antics bought her more attention than she normally commands. The combined efforts of the Fudds led to several near-falls, but Black would not be denied, hitting The Fatliner for the pin and a trip into the second round.

Apollo then came out for the second bout of the evening, trying to regain some momentum following a brutal series of matches against the Fat and the Furious. It would prove to be no rest for the wicked, as his opponent, “The Black Redneck” Kliff Hanger emerged from the back, filling up on the ovation from the crowd and riding a hot streak into tonight's action. A series of one-upsmanship moves at the opening bell even pulled in Senior Official Darrell Mays, after continued taunting by Apollo resulted in Mays shoving him to the ground, much to the delight of the fans.

The match's tempo seemed to multiply by the minute, as both men quickly scrapped any scientific playbooks. With good timing and quick thinking, Apollo took the lead, concentrating on the left leg of Kliff Hanger to try and ground the speed. However, the arrogance of Apollo would surface in this match, as not once, but twice he pulled Hanger up at the ref's 2-count to continue dishing out punishment. Wise man once say something about going to the well one too many times, as Apollo would soon find out, paying for his overconfidence after an explosive comeback by Kliff Hanger ended with a schoolboy for a hard-fought win for “The Black Redneck.”

K-Lo and Guido Andretti, now with manager Ricky Stonewall, looked to start a new era in CCW as they entered the ring. Tim the Baker, not ready to let his termination go just yet, instead brought out The Regulator and Rocco Andretti, his former clients' opponents for the evening! The Regulator and Rocco, making their tag team debut in CCW, showed a clear game plan early against an established team looking to add weight to their championship ambitions in K-Lo and Guido. They would use full advantage of their new manager, as Stonewall was apparently still aching to swing a chair, plastering Regulator during a spell of chaos in the ring. In the confusion, K-Lo would score the pin on Rocco following a vicious sawhorse DDT in their corner. On the way back to the locker room, it looked as though Tim the Baker will have to return to the drawing board, as there was some obvious dissatisfaction from The Regulator and Rocco Andretti over the outcome of the match.

With the lovely (if dangerous) Jesse Bell at his side, The Prophet was looking to make short work of Matt Maverick, going to the extent of laying in wait for him by the announcer's table as he made his entrance. The plan backfired, however, as Maverick dodged the attack, battling Prophet on the floor and into the ring. While Maverick may have monkey-wrenched the strategy, the early goings were all Prophet's. A missed high-risk move would open the door for Maverick to mount a brief comeback, but Prophet would score the pin following a reverse indian death drop. Maverick continues to show steady improvement in the singles ranks, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him working toward loftier goals in the upcoming weeks.

Biff Wellington III then approached the ring on crutches, escorted by Miss Hollywood. BW3 thanked the fans for their support following the injury he suffered last week, and updated them with the prognosis. A partially torn ACL looks to keep Wellington out of action for the next 4-6 months. Here's to hoping for a quick and full recovery for BW3, one of the most passionate men when it comes to his work on the independent scene today.

Action resumed with JB Thunder taking on Jebidiah Blackhawk in another CCW Championship tournament first round match-up. JB would start the match with his typical smash-mouth style, scattering some scientific moves into the mix to try and keep Blackhawk off balance. While he may have been separated from HNIC partner-in-crime Apollo, Thunder showed tremendous singles skills, looking down the road to a possible CCW title shot. Thinking on the same page isn't always a good thing, as Blackhawk exploded out of the gates, flat overwhelming Thunder and scoring a pinfall before anyone even realized a comeback was on. Wise man also say any wrestling match is just three seconds away from ending, and this one proved it without a shadow of a doubt.

The last first round tournament match of the evening also served as the main event, as Vito Andretti looked to make it a 2-for-2 evening by advancing to the second round against the “Done Deal” “Dirty” Dick Dalton. As the match kicked off, Dalton was not only living up to the “Dirty” moniker, but living dangerously at that, as he twice took occasion to slap Andretti across the face. Anyone who had seen Andretti in action before knew it was only a matter of time before that favor was repaid in kind. Swtiching gears, Dalton would work over the left arm of Andretti, mixing impact and submission moves to soften up his much bigger opponent. While Andretti would come from behind to hit a german suplex to pin Dalton, Senior Offical Darrell Mays elicted the wrath of the crowd by raising Dalton's hand, saying he had kicked out at two, in fact pinning Andretti for the upset win. The HNIC would try to take advantage of the situation attacking Andretti during the controversy, however Jack Black hit the ring immediately to even out the odds and send HNIC packing.

In a night that saw more than one controversy break out, the action continues to heat up as the field narrows in the CCW Heavyweight championship tournament. The next few weeks looks to bring only the best out of CCW's superstars as they try to advance in the tournament, or advance their chances down the road against the future champion. It's all up in the air, and the only place to see it drop is the CCW Arena next Tuesday night at 7:30pm.

This just in...as part of their training program, Classic Championship Wrestling is bringing in WLW/WWE/NWA-TNA & Ring of Honor star Nigel McGuiness to conduct an exclusive training seminar for the CCW prospects later this month. This shows the commitment CCW is showing to not only bringing the best in professional wrestling action to Louisville now, but for years to come. While the event will not be open to the public, for a fan it would be a great time to be a fly on the wall, as no one in the ring for that seminar will go away without at least a little knowledge from one of the finest ring technicians in the business today.

Classic Championship Wrestling holds live events every Tuesday night at the CCW Arena, 3327 Northwestern Parkway in Louisville, Kentucky. Doors open at 7:00pm, with a bell time of 7:30. General admission is $5, or $3, with a coupon available on the CCW website.
