Shameles or senseless leaders in Bangladesh

Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury
As a nation Bangladeshis are always proud for their rich culture and heritage, which is thousand years old. People of this country showed their unimaginable courage when they fought for Mother Language in 1952. Again, the same nation fought in 1971 for the independence of Bangladesh. Each time, naturally, Bangladeshis won.

But, the unfortunate part in the history of Bangladesh is the leaders, who are either ruling the country, or are occupying important positions in country´s politics. Sadly, these people in politics or power are either shameless or senseless or both. Let us look into several facts, which will surely stand as prove in favor of my comment.

Bangladeshi Home Minister:

On September 10, 2009 Bangladeshi Home Minister Advocate Sahara Khatun told the National Parliament that, there has been no deterioration of law and order situation in the country. She rejected the allegation that law and order situation was deteriorating in Bangladesh.

In her own statement, the Home Minister told the parliament that, during last eight months, since Awami League came in power, 2,279 [Two Thousand Two Hundred and Seventynine] people were murdered throughout the country.

Wao! When the home minister officially endorsed the fact right inside the parliament that during their tenure of eight months, more than 9 people were killed on an average in the country, does the Home Minister consider it to be good law and order situation? On the other hand, although the official figure is 2,279, the real number of murders around the country has already crossed four thousand.

Capital city Dhaka, has already turned into the most risky citirs, as according to Dhaka Metropolitan Police, on an average 5-6 hundred cases of snatches and robbery rake place right in the city.

Extortion by the ruling party cadres throughout the country has already pushed the industrial and business sectors in Bangladesh into a severe vulnerable situation. Many of the foreign investors are already planning to withdraw their investment from this country as extortion and other forms of crimes are committed mostly by the ruling party thugs, who are sheltered by influential figures in the government.

University campuses in the country, mostly are closed following violence by the activists of student´s wing of the ruling party.

Repression and persecution of religious minorities are continuing. There are series of reports on attack on especially Hindu minority groups, destruction of their temples and deities etc. Only few weeks back, several members of a Hindu family were abducted and tortured while female members raped by miscreants belonging to the ruling party. There is no action yet against those perpetrators, nor any of the responsible ministers ever visited the place of occurance.

Bangladeshi leader:

On Monday, September 14, 2009 the first ever General Strike has already been called during the 8-month tenure of the present government. This strike has been called by local groups opposing allocating gas exploration blocks to foreign companies.

Meanwhile, general secretary of Bangladesh Awami League and minister in charge of local government ministry, Syed Ashraful Islam, commenting on the general strike told reporters that, in the name of hartal [general strike], these people are trying to damage the economy of Bangladesh.

Wao, what a new statement from this Awami League leader! Awami League is the only party, which has always been telling that hartal [general strike] is the democratic right of the people. During 2001-2006 term, Awami League called hundreds of general strikes in Bangladesh, including a program named ´Logi-Boitha´ in October 2006, when Awami League chief and present Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina called her partymen to come on streets with bamboo sticks and wooden objects to ´demonstrate´. Later, thousands of party activists came on the streets with such objects as well sharp weapons and started attacking political opponents and innocent people on the streets, thus murdering a few dozens of people in three days. During that time, Dhaka city turned into a city of terror due to massive wildness by the Awami League activists.

Awami League leaders always voiced in favor of general strike. But, now, when they came in power, they are opposing to it. What a shameless double standard!

Here I should mentioned about another section of Bangladeshi leaders. Former minister and BNP leader Shahjahan Siraj was a former leftist. He became minister in 2001, when BNP came in power. Prior to becoming the minister, Shahjahan Siraj was a man of lower-middle class economic status. But, since he became the minister, Shahjahan Siran turned into a neo-millionaire. His son, Opu Siraj was one of the known negotiation agents for his father´s ministry, who was shamelessly receiving money from people in the name of giving various types of benefits from his father´s ministry.

Shahjahan Siraj and his corrupt son looted millions of dollars and smuggle major segment of such illigally earned money to various countries in the world.

When military controlled government came in power in 2007, Shahjahan Siraj fled the country along with members of his family like many other corrupt politicians in Bangladesh. But, recently, this corrupt man has returned home. Though he is now in prison, it is well anticipated that, these people will ultimately get back to politics and use their evil earned money in once again becoming a minister, to once again, screw up the fate of this nation. Should people like Shahjahan Siraj and other both in Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Bangladesh Awami League as well as Jatiyo Party led by former dictator Hussain Muhammed Ershad, have minimum shame, they should have either lived in exile for life or have committed suicide before showing their thief-like face to the nation.

There are surely honest and dedicated people in Bangladesh politics. We, as Bangladeshi, surely feel proud of those leaders, no matter whether we belong to any political party or platform or not. But, unfortunately, number of such honest leaders are very few. In each of the parties, we can hardly find 10-12 people like this, who are extremely honest and committed to the nation. But, very unfortunately, those leaders are never at the commanding position in our politics. Mostly corrupt and shameless goes into glamorous positions in Bangladeshi politics. This is truly unfortunate.

Actually, with the change of time, it is very much important for the people of Bangladesh, to abandon all these shameless and senseless people in politics and welcome those faces, who are committed, time-tested and of course honest.

This country had leaders like Moulana Bhashani, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Ziaur Rahman. Their honesty and integrity was never questioned. Now, it is time, that new generation of Bhashan, Mujib and Zia come in politics, thus ousting the existing bundles of shameless and senseless politicians, who are causing pains and agonies to the entire nation.
