SFO´S TERMINAL 2 REACHES CONSTRUCTION MILESTONE AS LAST I-BEAM INSTALLED

San Francisco, CA—Mayor Gavin Newsom today announced a critical milestone in the renovation of Terminal 2 at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). In just 18 months, the project is "topping off" by installing its last significant piece of structural steel.

"The renovation of Terminal 2 breathes new life into an old terminal," said Mayor Newsom. "This project allows the Bay Area to meet the growing the needs of travelers throughout the world, and ensures that SFO remains a significant economic engine in the region by creating and maintaining jobs."

The $371 million project is already responsible for the creation of nearly 600 construction-related jobs. The Airport has also been successful at obtaining and using federal stimulus funds under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act - a total of $31.85 million, creating a total of 65 new construction-related jobs.

Upon completion in the spring of 2011, the state-of-the-art facility will have 14 gates (13 narrow-body and one wide-body), more than 575,000 square feet of public space, a LEED Silver Certification, the nation´s first Slow Food® vendors offering wholesome food grown locally and prepared in a healthful manner, unique retail including a marketplace and spa, new commissioned artwork, reinstallation of previous T2 artwork, a "meeter and greeter" area, and two 500-square foot children´s play areas. The first year the Terminal 2 is forecast to accommodate 3.2 million passengers.

In the past few years, as other Airports were contracting, SFO was one of only four major airports to experience growth. Despite the global economic downturn, SFO continues to hold its own – posting a 2.5 increase in traffic July of this year, compared to July 2008. For comparison, many airports (LAX dropped 7 percent in the same time period) are still posting traffic losses. The growth at SFO is a direct result of the arrival and continued expansion of service by Virgin America, Southwest, JetBlue and a longtime partnership with American Airlines.

The Bay Area Economic Forum estimates that for every 1,000,000 passengers that fly in and out of SFO, 148 jobs are created. The Airport generates $2.2 billion in federal taxes, more than $883 million in state taxes, and more than $765 million in local tax revenue, yearly. Visitors who pass through SFO, also spend more than $10 billion in the greater Bay Area, per year
