Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood

When it comes to the matter of comparing things or people, we can´t seem to help ourselves. Comparing one person or thing to another is something we have all done at some point in our lives. Comparison sort of becomes our evaluation measuring device.

And in the world of video gaming, many comparisons are made all the time about video games. One video game reviewer, for example, might compare Wolfenstein 3D (a first person shooter) to Doom and may imply that one is more superior than the other for various reasons that include game play, the fun factor and so on.

So if you have been sort of spoiled by the Final Fantasy series of RPGs, then play something like Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, you will have a thing or two to say about it.

Although Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood for the Nintendo DS has been out since 2008. I just got around to playing it, so here is my view.

For the most part, I found The Dark Brotherhood to be lighthearted, fun and engaging.

It is lighthearted because other characters from previous Sonic titles join him on this quest to save their world from ruin. And just like in any Sonic video game, you or Sonic collect rings that he uses as to buy things.

The game is broken down into ten chapters. Chapters that contain side quests that you keep track of in Sonic´s journal. As you complete a side quest, a green check mark indicates that particular mission is over, after which you move on to the other and so on.

And the more you play this Nintendo DS offering, the more you realize it´s Sonic in his heroic glory. The game is stylus driven, but once you get used to that, you see Sonic running, jumping, collecting rings, solving the few in game puzzles and rescuing those in distress.

Incorporated with three save files, you can save your game just about anywhere in the lush, colourful landscape of Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood's world.

I enjoyed playing this light RPG. It was fun, the graphics are colourful and clear with great sound effects to match. And if you have not played this particular RPG and you´re looking for something a little on the light side, give it a try.

You will see characters such as: Amy Rose, Tails, Rouge, Knuckles and others as they join Sonic to aid him rid their world of evil.

And, of course, if you are looking for something with more depth and epic storytelling, Final Fantasy: Dissidia for the Sony PSP is out.
