Healthcare Across America
Estimates vary according to how many people across America remain without healthcare. Some estimates are as high as fifty million. Others, as low as thirty-six million. Either way, that is a lot of uncovered people. I happen to be one of those uncovered. I am uncovered because of cost---plain and simple.
On television ads some companies are offering insurance as low as $10 per day, but that adds up to $300 per month and any way you slice it that is a lot of money! If healthcare was affordable all of us would have it, but the truth is that it is not. So cost is an enormous hurdle, but so is quality. Every person in America should have access to quality healthcare---not just those who can afford it. Healthcare should be a right and not a privilege and President Obama is trying to ensure that is the case. I personally applaud his efforts and hope that something can be passed by congress in the not too distant term.
President Obama said (Pear & Calmis, 2009) "The cost of inaction is greater". I agree. The Obama plan proposes a public-private partnership toward healthcare which would allow more competition and help to streamline costs. President Obamas´ plan leaves the choices up to the individual while cutting the costs for employers and small businesses. If you, or someone you know, like´s the coverage they now have there is no need to change. However, if you have no coverage at all, like me, then you can get a much better deal under this plan than is currently available. President Obamas´ plan will also allow each of us to select our own doctors and delete the need for referrals that create red tape and long waits. Senator´s Kennedy (D-MA) and Dodd (D-CT) are putting the finishing touches on what they hope will pass as a universal healthcare plan in both the Senate and the House before summers´ end.
Pear and Calmis (2009) said that the same fear mongering that the right is using to try to circumvent this healthcare plan from becoming a reality is the same thing that took place in the 1960´s with Medicare. Medicare has turned out to be a win-win plan for our aging and elderly. The Obama healthcare plan can be an even greater success! Please write or call your local and state congressional representatives encouraging them to vote in favor of the Kennedy-Dodd Plan. The time to act is now!
