Mustang Survival: Saving Lives for a Living
If used properly, life jackets and personal floatation devices (PFDs) could prevent approximately two-thirds of all boating-related drowning accidents involving children. According to the US Coast Guard, drowning is second only to motor vehicle accidents as the primary cause of deaths among children. These statistics become more harrowing after pointing out that children often follow an adult's example.
We have research that indicates children whose parents wear life jackets around water are more likely to wear one themselves,” says Jen Medearis Costello, program manager at the National SAFE KIDS Campaign. “Therefore we recommend that parents not only actively supervise their children around water, but also demonstrate safe behaviour-including wearing life jackets.”
Mustang Survival is one company that has decided to tackle this issue head-on by bringing awareness of boating safety and other threats to children's lives to the forefront.
Mustang Survival is a leader in reliable high performance marine safety and survival gear. Initially known for designing personal floatation devices (PFDs) and inflatable life jackets for leisure and power boating, Mustang Survival has since expanded its line and expertise to hunting, angling and even customized flotation coats for snowmobiling and a specially designed PFD for Space Shuttle operation. As it has grown both in size and reputation, Mustang Survival has become the provider of choice for the coast guard and military.
The most recent innovation in personal flotation devices (PFDs) is an automatic inflation feature. Only when completely submersed in water will the PFD inflate without human intervention. This allows the wearer high mobility, as it does not interfere with regular activities. This is perfect for parents that neglect to wear their lifejackets in front of their children because they find awkward. Much like a seatbelt or bicycle helmet, a standard PFD is often not worn because it is cumbersome and unbecoming. However, the MD3053 that fits comfortably and unobtrusively over a sweater or jacket and makes itself noticed only when needed.
It is one thing to encourage children to wear their life jackets and PFDs by setting an example and another to ensure that they have properly fitting gear. Recently, Mustang Survival has released a line of children's life jackets that place a great emphasis on safety and comfort. Made with AirSoft foam, these children's life jackets have excellent circulation, adjustable leg straps, a Comfort Collar and a heavy duty grab strap to pull your child from the water. The jackets come in three sizes: Infant - MV1335, Child - MV1340 and Youth - MV1345
Based out of Richmond BC, Mustang Survival has now expanded to international proportions. Never one to forget its roots in saving lives and safety, it has since established a strong reputation for helping with humanitarian causes, predominately in power boating and marine safety. Recently, Mustang Survival has broadened its horizons to assist with other charitable endeavours.
What better company to support a fundraising effort to raise $11,000 for leukemia than Mustang Survival whose corporate motto is 'we save lives for a living'. Maria Hruschak and Mike Catherall are attempting to raise this sum for leukemia and lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease research through the Team in Training program by running the Mayor's Marathon in Alaska this June and Mustang Survival have generously offered their assistance.
The leukemia's are the most common cancers in the young, and account for slightly more than one-quarter of all malignancies in Canadian children and teenagers. In the United States 29000 people a year, including over 2000 children are diagnosed with the disease.
As it is possible to greatly reduce the number of children that die tragic deaths each year as a result of boating and marine accidents with the proper awareness and equipment; it is also possible to save the lives of children with leukemia with enough funding, research and devotion.
