Explore the history of the mighty Mississippi at the National Great Rivers Museum at the Melvin Price Locks and Dam. This exciting museum is dedicated to telling the story of the Mississippi River from its grand history and cultural significance to its ecological importance and role as a transportation corridor. The museum features an exhibit gallery packed with more than 20 interactive and computer animated exhibits focusing on the cycles of the river, nature, barge traffic, water consumption and more. After a taste of history gather your friends and family for a day on the river kayaking, swimming, or just relaxing after a hike. After touring the sights you'll be ready for a festive time so head down along the river for the kick off Memorial Day in Alton for the oldest continuously running Memorial Day Parade in the country. From May through September, thousands of people come to Downtown Alton for the monthly Block Party. The most popular party of all is in July when the "parrotheads" come to town for the annual Jimmy Buffet Tribute Party. Live music, great food and dancing in the streets all night long — live like a local! Celebrate "Life on the River" with the "River Rats" of Grafton at the annual Great Rivers Towboat Festival.
Itīs the only one of its kind in the Midwest. Browse river displays, listen to a little Zydeco music, dig into the crawfish boil and take a tour of working towboats on the river. Wrap up the summer with the Jersey County Victorian Festival in Jerseyville.A stagecoach heist, Civil War battle and Lincoln delivering the Gettysburg Address put "History in Motion" for this annual festival held Labor Day weekend.
