Terry Gomez's gripping "Carbon Black" at the Autry

---Theater Review CARBON BLACK, written by Terry Gomez (Comanche) and directed by Randy Reinholz (Choctaw), the Producing Artistic Director and co-founder of Native Voices at the Autry, is billed as a humor-tinged suspenseful psychological drama. The play certainly delivers drama and suspense in a succession of disturbing scenes that tear at the heart and quicken the pulse, but it's hard to find humor in a story about an agoraphobic woman and the young son she's all but imprisoned with her unreasonable fear. Early on we recognize their topsy-turvy relationship. Carbon "Inky" Black (played by Michael Drummond) takes care of his mother, while she struggles to maintain her role as the parent. As the story progresses, we see a constant ... more

Redistricting Under Voters First Act Threatens Democratic Control of California State Legislature

San Francisco Leaders and Environmentalists Object to Water Legislation

SAN FRANCISCO ... While Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-Los Angeles) called Friday's signing of several water bills "historic," several San Francisco leaders and environmentalists object to the water deal and believe that it is more of a 19th Century solution to a current day problem. "This water package is a bad deal for San Francisco and the Bay-Delta ecosystem," said Senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco), who voted against the water bills. "Not only does it ignore San Francisco's conservation efforts, it threatens our long-standing water rights. While San Francisco should contribute to the solution, a water deal should not be at such a high expense for our city's residents or jeopardize our state's environment." "This water pa... more

House Republican Health Care Substitute: Putting Families At Risk

The ideas that House Republican have put forward as a bill substitute will let insurance companies continue to deny you coverage if you are sick; will do little to make insurance more affordable; and will put insurers ahead of consumers by undermining existing consumer protections.
