Oklahoma Homo-Haters Trying Their Best for an Arrest

Testing Shepard/Byrd Hate Crimes Law (Oklahoma City) Two Oklahoma City fundies, wanting to get a larger share of the bigger bigot spotlight got just that this past Monday, November 16, in Washington, DC. The only thing is that the bigger share wasn't very bright, nor did it succeed in getting them arrested, charged, or cuffed as was their fond hope. Their martyrdom for the Eternal Light will have to wait another day. Dr. Steve Kern, husband of terorrist-snifer GOPer Rep. Sally Kern, along with Paul Blair, devoted homo-hater, were hoping to get arrested. Their public attempt at civil disobedience looked more like a childish temper tantrum resulting from their pique with Congress passing the Shepard/Byrd Hate Crime Law. h... more

IRAQ MASH

I had to read a lot of books about the current war and occupation in Iraq before I found one that's laugh out-loud hilarious. It's a book about a U.S. military hospital in Iraq, a journal kept for a 10-month tour of duty by an operating room medic. The story never leaves the hospital, and it focuses in large part on the relationships among the characters working there, including pranks and hijinks aplenty. One almost inevitably thinks of MASH and its fictional Army hospital in Korea, but there are major differences. The basic similarity between MASH and this brilliant new book, "Mass Casualties" by Michael Anthony, is disturbing to consider. These are two episodes from different corners of an empire of bases, wars, and occupations sp... more

Tormenting turkeys: Not in the holiday spirit

On Thanksgiving, millions of Americans will gather around dead turkeys to give thanks for the blessings in their lives. Turkeys, of course, have nothing to be thankful for. Before they're slaughtered, these smart, social birds, who enjoy having their feathers stroked and gobbling along to music, spend five to six months packed together so tightly in dark sheds that flapping a wing or stretching a leg is nearly impossible. To keep the frustrated, cramped birds from pecking and clawing at one another, factory workers cut off parts of the birds' toes and a portion of their upper beaks. These procedures are known to cause chronic and acute pain. The males' snoods, the fleshy appendage under their chin, are also chopped off—without a... more

4-H: Cruel to animals and kids

Like most little girls, my stepdaughter loves animals. She joined a local 4-H club when she was 9, solely because "cows are cool." Now that the fall 4-H animal auctions are upon us, I can't help but remember Bonnie's first "assignment"—a beautiful cow named Dana with long lashes and ears as soft as velvet. We all grew to love Dana, but none more so than Bonnie, who spent hours grooming her and walking her on a lead. I had misgivings about Bonnie's decision to join 4-H: Unlike an unsuspecting 9-year-old, I knew the ultimate fate of the cows and other animals used in this program. My fears were realized a couple years into the program when Bonnie learned that Meredith, another one of "her" cows, who was sick and unable to repro... more

Obama's China visit no fun

President Obama stopped in China yesterday during his tour of Asian nations. All was not well in Beijing, unfortunately. On his first meeting with Chinese President Hu Jintao, Obama bowed too deeply and knocked heads with the Communist leader. Obama was quick to apologize, but his attempt at humor, an impression of Curly of the Three Stooges comedy team, failed to impress Hu. Last night, at the state dinner honoring Obama, the president was serenaded by the People.s Liberation Army band. They played famous American pop tunes, including Slow Boat To China, the Ramones. I Want To be Sedated and What Were You Smoking? by the Stoners. Obama committed another faux pas during dinner when he told Hu "I like the Lama." Admiration for t... more

Why Can't We Do to DC What We Did to Seattle?

I've been reading a brand new book called "The Battle of the Story of the Battle of Seattle," which is in large part an analysis of what worked in the protesting of the World Trade Organization 10 years ago. Why is it, I wonder, that activists were able to shut down the center of this major city in Washington state, but for years we have been unable to shut down the center of Washington, D.C., in opposition to wars. Certainly, we've turned out more people to march around DC on a Saturday than took part in the Seattle action. But we've never shut the place down on a series of weekdays and prevented congressional, White House, and military staff from getting to work. And we've never tried to do so -- not with the sort of broad-coalition... more

They Should Get a Union

"If a majority of workers want a union, they should get a union. It's that simple. We need to stand up to the business lobby and pass the Employee Free Choice Act. That's why I've been fighting for it in the Senate and that's why I'll make it the law of the land when I'm president of the United States." --Barack Obama Nobody is making it the law of the land. Nobody is fighting for it. The Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) has drifted down to the bottom of the AFL-CIO's website, buried beneath good economic proposals which, however, do nothing to build a labor movement. EFCA is not to be found anywhere on the front page of Change to Win's website at all. The media's not smearing EFCA with U.S. Chamber of Commerce lies anymore. Congr... more

TV show 'V' may reflect real UFOs, ET visitors

(This article originally appeared on the Joint Recon Study Group site.) The new ABC TV series "V" seems to be drawing a solid audience and may be helping us consider important issues facing our society today. The original 1983 miniseries was reportedly related to the novel by Sinclair Lewis, "It Can't Happen Here," about the Nazis coming to power in Germany. Yet, what if we look at the more literal context of the show ... that extraterrestrial or unusual visitors of some kind have arrived, perhaps quite some time ago, and are among us? In the original 1983 two-part miniseries, the 1984 three-part miniseries and the TV series that aired from 1984 to 1985, the visitors were portrayed as reptilian evil-doers who wanted to take ove... more

KSM and MSM

Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and the corporate "mainstream" media make quite a pair. We're hearing a very "balanced" debate over whether KSM should be tried in New York City, and whether the most insane objections to that proposal are really insane or not. But what are we not hearing? We're not hearing that trying criminals for the crime of 9-11 ought to have been what we did years ago, rather than waging wars in response to a crime. We're not discussing the possibility that had alleged 9-11 criminals been tried years ago rather than being imprisoned and tortured together with hundreds of innocents depicted as subhuman monsters, the "war on terror" might have been replaced with simply the wars on Iraqis and Afghans and Pakistanis. What eff... more

Movie '2012' helps us prepare for future

(This article originally appeared on the Transcendent TV & Media site.) The new blockbuster movie "2012" is exciting and fun ... but is it based on anything close to reality? Could our planet Earth go through changes so fundamental that crustal plates shift and buckle, widespread earthquakes shake and multiple volcanoes explode? NASA says don't worry about it. But don't rule it out, according to some theories. Thanks to Sony Pictures and director Roland Emmerich, moviegoers get a look at what global geological catastrophe might look like. The movie portrays the disaster as occurring according to some interpretations of the Mayan "Long Count" calendar ... in December of 2012. But several kinds of calamities could strike Earth... more

Ban Urges Countries to Press on Political Deal at Climate Summit

New York: Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is urging countries to seize the opportunity presented by next month.s climate change conference in Copenhagen to clinch a political agreement that will help chart the way forward on a new legally binding pact to combat global warming. "Opportunity is knocking. It is up to you to open the door," Mr. Ban told a two day meeting that began Monday in the Danish capital, ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference. In addition, Turkmenistan will continue to pump 8 bcm through the existing Korpeje-Kurtkui pipeline to the northwestern provinces of Iran. This comes to 19 bcm of gas exports in 2010, bypassing the Russian network. Is it enough to protect Turkmenistan from Gazprom bullying? In order to a... more
